Two prostitution raids target downtown owner

Judicial police raided what they called two hidden prostitution locations in the downtown and on Avenida 10. Both operations were run by the same owner, said unofficial reports. One operation was hidden behind a massage parlor front, a report said.

Usually prostitution raids result in the closing of a business for a day or two, but this owner may have plenty to worry about. Agents reported that they found a 16-year-old working as a prostitute in one of the locations. If true, that would be a major crime.

Kingston was the place that was raided. The 'San' was raided with similar results, and was back open in a few days with the same und***ge girl working there. They are now closed, probably for good. As was posted elsewhere, the police and such have been very active lately, for reasons unknown. There seems to be no real method to their actions that I can detect. I saw them pulling over cars with middle class couples in them to search for drugs and weapons near the Key Largo. I guess that's safer than wandering into Leon XIII.

Friends in town headed for Athena 101 in Pavas last Friday got a heads up call from the manager to stay away as the policia were there. Thank you Ruth! Wait until our distinguished Laura comes into office next month. Hell, she thinks the casinos are havens for prostitution. :evil:

It never fails to amaze me how some people can have such a good thing going, but they have to cross that line (in this case the 16-year-old) that gets them in big trouble.

I lived in Memphis for 10 years, and we had THE BEST strip club in the USA (take that for what it's worth, but it was). Every once in a while, they would get raided and shut down for pimps plying their trade in the club and drugs on the premises. On more than one occasion I told several of the managers/owners that if they would just check the drugs and pimps, the cops would leave them alone for all of the other stuff that goes on in there. Finally the feds came in undercover and sure enough, bought drugs from several of the girls and caught several of the pimps in the act. Shut down permanently -- a sad day brought on by monumental stupidity by the owners/managers.

Another MP Raid?

Given the increasing amount (?) of raids that are being publicized, is it possible that this is either a political ploy to lull the population into a false sense of security, as the new government is poised to take the reins, or a genuine attempt to confront the P4P nature of the SJ gringo scene?

As we all know, in many cases the incoming gov't can at times rattle the status quo to demonstrate activity (not necessarily change) that kicks up some dust, pisses off the opposition and mobilizes the police machine.

Perhaps I could call on the in-country residents to post their opinions. Given the shift in political will and winds, is this indicative of a new regime and propaganda movement against the gulch or a tempest in a teapot to fuel the illusion of enforcement activity?

Either way, given the propensity of the frequency of raids, there is definitely a focus from the enforcement community on the activities of travelers.

They might be "cracking down", but I still am not seeing indication of widespread harrassment. So far, the raids have been conducted on those the police claim are doing something illegal (working girls too young, etc.), and lacking proof, the establishments have reopened promptly.

Seems to be biz as usual for any place.. From what workers and owners tell me they get raided once to twice a year but the force the gov seems to be displaying now is like nothing seen before..

From what I see, it doesn't amount to any significant policy change. It's more PR than serious, more for show than anything else. If I were a cop, I'd rather raid a brothel than chase a bad guy into one of the slums. The police seem to agree.
