Aromatherapist using gloves?

Hiya all!

I went to hand in my Disclosure form at a residential home (Adults-mental health) where I have got a couple of clients awaiting treatments (yay!)

I was talking to the dept manager there and she said that the previous aromatherapist used gloves when carrying out her treatments and asked me if I planned on doing the same.

I was a bit shocked and said 'no' and asked her why she had used gloves and she said she was unsure-she just did.

I know the aromatherapist in question and have seen her carry out massages in class. She never used gloves in class so Im wondering if anyone had any ideas as to why she would do this???

She may have been aware of one of the residents having a colonisation of MRSA (quite common, unfortunately, if they have been in hospital), so was taking extra precautions. However, using gloves for aromatherapy is not ideal and good handwashing practices (with perhaps some tea tree) would suffice.

Obviously without asking her, you won't know her reasons for sure.

I agree here, I've heard of people using gloves where infection is a risk, or when the aromatherapist uses oils which they are sensitive to (or ones with high risk of sensitivity like black pepper) but standard practice is to avoid them if there's any real issue. Seems unusual - can you ask her if there was a specific reason - obviously understanding confidentiality, but I'd be interested to know the reasoning. I personally would feel that a treatment with gloves would be poor, cause you cannot get the same feedback and it must surely be uncomfortable for the client.
