Edmonton police expect to arrest more than 200 johns in 2017, double the number arrested last year, says a senior officer whose work targets the prostitution trade.The Edmonton Police Service has conducted six stings so far this year aimed at targeting people trying to buy sex. Last week's round-up resulted in 11 arrests — 10 men and one woman.
"We've made a concerted effort to improve our numbers, increase our numbers of stings, just so we can have that much greater of an impact on the demand," explained Staff Sgt. Dale Johnson.
Johnson is in charge of the human trafficking and exploitation unit, which until last week was known as the vice unit.
It's just one of the many recent changes that have been made in the fight against prostitution in Edmonton. The sex trade itself is also undergoing significant change as prostitutes move off the street and onto the internet.
"We've managed to arrest 63 johns, and those numbers are on pace to at least double the numbers that we achieved last year," Johnson said.

Police admit they've had to adapt with the times, to develop new techniques to effectively target the men and women purchasing sex online. Johnson refused to divulge details, but admitted placing dummy or decoy ads is a tactic police use.

I whole heartedly agree with control of prostitution on the streets for everyone's safety. Any ladies being forced to work should also be a priority for police control.

I understand, there are bad Johs, just like there are bad people who have dogs, etc. The list goes on.

My problem with the increase of stings is the police are focusing on the wrong people . Instead of johns, go after the pimps and gangs who in some cases are forcing the women to work, or taking advantage of women and keeping tight reins on them and supporting their addictions, in return for sexual services sold to johns.

If safety is the priority, then get the thugs who push the ladies into the business.

Punishing Johns who are just looking for some intimate release from women who are legit service providers doing this of their own free will is not the answer.

More reason for these boards to help us enjoy the trade without being afraid of stings to reel us in.

Here is a quick mathematical scenario.

50 ladies working x 365 days = 18250 appts a year. Catch 200 johns = .01% of johns participating.

50 ladies is a very conservative example. Increase the number of ladies and the 200 John percentage target just keeps going down. How many of these 200 johns are a threat to the safety of the ladies. That brings the stings results down even farther.

Get the thugs, get the pimps, get the gangs. Don't focus on johns!!!

I think our resources for police stings could be better used patrolling our streets for our safety. Homicides are way up again this year. Maybe that is a better target to control.

I suppose it is out of our control. Be safe. Be smart.

Further to the above comments, here are some things I do to reduce my chances of getting caught in a sting.

Follow boards like this to check out reviews and help pick decent reviewed ladies.
Flaw here is, next we could be reading reviews posted by police

Go to places you have been before and do repeat visits
Flaw is if the police are or can set up at an established place

Pm with fellow members and share info that way, as opposed to online reviews.
Flaw is you might be pming with a police officer.

Avoid to good to be true ads
Flaw is some are good, Be very cautious and do lots of homework before your appt is booked.

Book with Caf ladies who advertise on Caf
Flaw is any new ladies joining who are actually police. Perhaps Caf can set up some sort of reference system to help ensure ladies and guys are not police

Avoid and drive/walk away from any bad vibe scenarios
Flaw is our little head kicks in and logic is not one of his better qualities

What other tips do you have when choosing a date.

We need to do a better job of protecting ourselves from being exploited.

The biggest joke is that they call themselves the 'Human Trafficking and Exploitation Unit' but their work is stopping the average Joe from hooking up with a like-minded lady and sharing some intimate time, NOT Human Trafficking and NOT exploitation.

Because it is easier and the numbers they report make it LOOK like they are being effective.

Question...There are X number of exploited women in Edmonton RIGHT NOW.
Cops run a sting and catch you and I going to see a lady who is doing this to feed her kids, on her own free will.
There are STILL X number of women out there. What was accomplished by netting you and I in that Sting ?

Answer: Absolutely NOTHING accomplished...But it looks good in the paper the next day !!!

You are 100% right...They need to go after the thugs exploiting women but they will not do that because it is harder, takes longer and they want stories (to make it LOOK like they are effective) now.

Yeah, its kinda like fighting illegal drugs by arresting the drug users.

if the government are so set on protecting woman, what about the woman who get abused everyday whether physical, emotional or mental. You report the crime to the police and they do nothing but tell you to keep a log of when and how many times. Then come back. Arresting johns isn't the solution. Get the pimps and gangs. Why not set up a red light district? the girls or guys can get checked regularly. The government can collect taxes as well. Just like with weed that is now legit.

I think we guys have to take some of the blame here too, esp when it comes to Escorts. When the City licenses them, they have all the info. When we respond to BP ads who are not licensed just to save a buck, we screw our own safety and the ladies who pay for a license. If we demanded to see the license and refused to see anyone who did not have one two things would happen (#2 in my case at least).
1. I'd be more willing to show ID to a lady who has gone thru a criminal check etc and a case of I'll show you mine if you show me your (you can take that any way you want hahahaha).
2. I would get rid of the ladies who don't have a license allowing us more ability to protect those who operate legit.
