SUMMIT TWP., MI – A Summit Township massage therapy clinic is still open even after its first client of the day unintentionally created a drive thru Friday morning.
The Summit Township Fire Department was called about 9:20 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, for a full-sized van that crashed into Cloud 9 Therapeutic Massage, 3322 Francis St., destroying a wall in front of the business.
There were no injuries.
The clinic’s owner, Annette Bennett, was inside waiting for Jack Choate, her first client of the day, when Choate’s foot slipped on the accelerator and he drove his van into the front of the building, Bennett said.
“It scared the hell out of me,” Bennett said describing the sound of the clinic’s front window exploding in the crash. “(Jack) got out of the van, told me he was OK and apologized. I’m just glad he’s OK”
A Summit Township building inspector checked the damage and said it did not sustain any major structural damage.
After making sure Bennett was OK, Choate, 69, made arrangement to have the hole in the clinic boarded up with his insurance and began cleaning up the damage himself.
“I’m sorry about all this because Annette really is the best,” he said. “I’ve seen many massage therapists over the last 40 years and nobody is as good as her.”
Bennett, who holds degrees from Baker College, Jackson College and Michigan State University, has been operating the Summit Township business for eight years and practicing massage therapy for 15 years.
Only two appointments were canceled for the day to make time for cleanup. Beyond that the clinic remains open, Bennett said.
“I think we both need a relaxing massage after this,” she said.
