Forearm Dance Video

I saw a new video today (new to me at least) by Val Guin titled Forearm Dance. It's on techniques using your forearms. It looks really intriguing but it's also $75. If anyone has seen this video, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Val Guin is a teacher at my school (IPSB - Culver City, CA)... I can ask around about the video, though I dunno if I'll get the most unbiased of opinions

I have overheard many great things about Val's work through other students, though it'll be some time before I can really start attending classes with her (yay finances).


In the meantime, I think one of the massage supply stores around here actually rents out videos, I'll see if I can get my mitts on it

Yeah, it looks like it has borrowed pretty extensively from temple style lomi lomi, not a bad thing but perhaps that should be acknowledged in the promotional material rather than saying it was "created" by val.
Really, we should all be creative with the way we work, building and developing new movements from the basics we have learned.

I just purchased rhe Forearm dance video and I have some thoughts to share... First, I think its one of the most beautiful, professionally made videos out there. It has great instructional segments, A teachr/student portion and a full body routine done to music and done w/ stroke descriptions. The quality Val and her production team left no corners unturned as even the model on her table has "sticky tape" secureing the drape so no sneak peeks happen during the routine demo...lol. As one of the menu choces, it even has a behind the scenes look at how the video was made and alot of interveiws w/ the cast ( her daugther was the producer of the video) , a different view of most massage videos. and finally, she explains her technique with thorough descriptions......Now secondly......I feel she doesnt do justice for all the Lomi Lomi Practitioners out there who cherish Lomi and take it to heart when therapists dis- respect the work. Only twice, was Lomi mentioned, one from another therapist describing the Forearm Dance and the other from Val herself....in a seforum.xxxed interview setting and she only refered to the Kahuna from Hawaii as a guest instructor at her school. She claims to have developed this style of massage, but if you've ever taken Tom Cochrans Lomi course, or have seen Carrie Rowell's Lomi video, Val has used strokes, techniques, and terminology from these two other actual Lomi instructors. As a Lomi practitioner and instructor, I feel a little at a loss. She even has the nerve to call her production company "Ohana Productions"!! I'm interested to see where she'll take this, maybe she'll get another vision and create another form of massage that the practitioner uses foot presses and yoga stretches and call it .."The foot press and Yoga stretch dance"... :roll:

I enjoyed watching the video. It has a professional quality and I do enjoy her voice. However, I have been in the business for over 14yrs and whenever I feel a little bored I ask the universe for a new approach. Funny thing, I justed started to do this type of massage in the last couple of days. I have never seen Lomi Lomi or the Forearm Dance but I can honestly say, I am making the same moves. Now, I am not bragging but if you love what you do, you are somewhat creative and open to the spirit of massage and healing, all you have to do is ask and you shall receive! Honestly, having a basic understanding of Swedish really is the basis for all types of massage. Just open up and play. Massage is yoga, dance, tai chi, etc all rolled up !

I have seen the video adverticed about the forarm dance but....money just aint there. thanks for the reviews tho... I think i will find one on lomi lomi instead!!! maybe i can find one in my price range!!! ($20 ok wishful thinking lol)

I agree. I treat my cleints like i would want to be treated and nothing less!!! Thanks for explaning lomi lomi!!! I know about the swedish massage because I am a swedish massage therapist, a Reiki master and a certified medical massage therapist who would love to get into other modalities of massage just because I think the more i know the more help i can be to cleints and myself!!! the only thing is here there are not a lot of opptions and the opptions we have are mostly swedish techneics under a different name. so....I have clients who have been to other therapist that have gone to a deep tissue class, and the cleint tells me they want deep tissue and they expect bruse and pain and no nothing about deep tissue work. its a mess!!! and it makes me angry!!! so i try to know as much as i can about the modalities out there so when a cleint gets off my table they dont go to someone else and they understand the modaltiy and know why i choise to do that one. :

I know this is reviving an old thread . . . but I must admit that I have gained a lot of information in watching Val Guin's "Forearm Dance" -- yes, I had already been applying some of the same things from my creative side -- but her DVD introduces some new concepts that really work!

And as far as not giving LomiLomi the credit -- this has only made me want to pursue LomiLomi even more!

It is a beautiful video --as mentioned above -- and has made me rethink the use of my forearms and elbows. The differences are amazing! I found it well worth the $75.00 and the more I review it, the more I learn!

I watched the clips of the video on the website and I'm intrigued. Unfortunately my price limit is around $40.00 .

Looks like a cool modality though, more on the relaxation side though. I think she goes a little too fast to go deep.

Actually, Jason, even though the DVD is incredibly relaxing to watch -- not only massage by the ocean, but Val Guin herself is so incredibly smooth in her movements that it does seem like a "dance" -- I have found I can go far more deeply into the tissue with her methods. I am quite petite and have found them invaluable for both larger female clients and male clients. And it saves an amazing amount of wear and tear on the fingers and thumbs!

As I said, this has actually made me want to pursue some LomiLomi DVDs (they aren't cheap either, I know!) -- can anyone suggest what they consider the best LomiLomi DVDs out there?

I've only seen the clips on the website, not the whole video, but I am very familiar with temple style lomi lomi - it may look relaxing, and it is very relaxing (rhythmic motions, long smooth strokes, large areas covered in the one move, not very specific work from when you look at it) the client does melt into the table, but it is done with the forearm - there is a big bone, it can be pretty firm, plus even though it may not look very muscle specific, it can be. It can get VERY deep when you add a bit more pressure with the forearm, or move onto the elbow, but the client is soooooo relaxed from the long flowing rhythmic strokes they let you do deeper work without even realising it.

It may look like a fluff and buff relaxation style massage, and it can be done that way, but it can easily do sooooooooooo much more.

I'd suggest go do a class, you really really really need to be receiving temple style lomi lomi to be able to grasp its full potential.

For anyone in the Los Angeles/OC area, Bodywork Emporium (http://www.bodywork-emporium.com) has vhs/dvd rentals of some of the titles that they carry. At least, they did the last time I checked...
Renting sure beats paying $70 on a video you're not sure about. :?
