(KTLA) – Massages aren’t for everyone. But for many, you realize the benefits after getting past your personal boundaries: it’s relaxing and probably good for you in various ways.
Now, one startup named Aescape is developing a robot to bring high-quality massages to the masses.
The company is installing its systems in places across the country – mostly fancy, upscale locations like Equinox, Ritz Carlton hotels, and Pause Wellness Studios.
That’s where I headed to try out the high-tech massage table.
First, you book an appointment through an app – it’s sort of like getting an Uber. You pick a time and place, and it’s all confirmed on the spot. A half-hour massage is $60 at the location I visited.
Once you’re there, you get a quick briefing from an associate who walks you through the process. Then, you’re given a tight-fitting body suit to get the massage in. Since there’s no oil, this is how the robot’s arms are able to glide over your body.
Then, you lay face down, and start the process.
A giant screen is about a foot from your face, this is your control panel – it allows you to choose your music, visual backgrounds and pressure intensity. You can even see a visualization of your body and what the robot is doing at any given time.
Cameras scan your body (I’m told they don’t actually capture pictures, more of a topography), and then Aescape uses AI to come up with a program that’s personalized to you.
The actual massage was slower and more methodical than a human – at times, you might feel like you’re “waiting” for something more to happen. The part of the robot that touches your body is heated, which I thought was a nice touch.
Aescape tells me the robot took seven years to develop and they believe they are bringing massages to more people.
After my experience, I don’t think robots will be replacing humans anytime soon. Still, I do see the potential for a better robotic massage being a self-service, on-demand option in locations like airports, hotels, and wellness centers nationwide.
And for those who are uncomfortable with human massages, this may be a way to get the benefit without experiencing social discomfort.
