How to fix java chat room connection troubles. (Frequent disconnections.)?

I've used Java chat rooms for years and recently I've been having a lot of trouble staying connected. It is fine for a minute or two, and the I get the message "Internet connection having trouble. Attempting to clear it up. Please wait." And I'll get reconnected after another minute or so, but then it just happens again. It's really annoying and frustrating. Is there a way to stop this from happening, so I can talk in the chat without being interrupted with disconnections? This computer uses Windows XP, if that helps. Thanks.
