How to start a conversation with a guy over Facebook (Without using chat)?

Ok so here's my story, *sigh*
I'm a junior in high school right now, but back in freshman year, there was this senior who i had a small crush on. I didn't have a class with him, or even lunch, but i saw him in the halls during passing time. We never said a word to eachother, or anything like that. I didn't even know the kids name. After he'd graduate i forgot all about him. Though about a week ago while i was bored, looking through one of my brothers old yearbook, I had he popped into my head, and all i knew about him was that he was year older than my brother and three years older than me. Though Oddly enough i found him. (Ikr i'm such a creeper, lol) But anyways, So i looked him up via facebook and turns out we had like 7 mutual friends (one of them happens to be my brother) So i added him. The next day i got a notification saying he'd accepted. I was a happy camper. I didn't really say anything to him, i wanted to but didnt know how not to be anymore of a creeper that i already was being. Luckily about a week after adding him, i got another notification saying he'd commented on one of my photos. He wrote, "You have really beautiful eyes" I thanked him, and commented on one of his photos saying "You also have pretty eyes" Lol, he thanked me back. Ok so a Few weeks went by with no talking whatsoever then a day before valintines day i got another notification saying he'd yet again commented on one of my photos, this time he wrote, "I don't want to be "that guy" BUT, i really like this picture, you are really pretty" Again i thanked him and wrote on another on of his photos, "You are very cute too" he said thanks and that was it. It's now been about 3 or 4 weeks again with no communication at all! I kinda really want to talk to him again, or get the ball rolling some how! He liked my status the other day, but that don't mean sh**. I'm not usually to desperate type but this kid is so dang cute. I can't get him off my mind. He is single, so that's good. I know him and my brother we in a play together, the year he was a senior and my bro was a junior. Though my brother tells me, they weren't really friends they just knew one another, and they didn't really talk.
I need some advice on how to start something with him w/o the use of chat, because 1st of all, he's a sophomore in college and is never on when i'm on, and when he is..I don't want to send him a random chat at 3:30 am, being like "Sup;D" That's creepy and weird in itself. I kind of want to start a poke war with him, but i don't know if he'd poke back or if he's into that. I'm really confuzzled, (<--lol) And honestly stuck on what to do without seeming desperate. Any advice?

Just write something simple on his wall. I personally think chat would be better, because a wall post is kind of odd and out of the blue. Just talk to him long enough until you get his phone number, and then take it away from facebook.
