I can't hear my friends on Xbox 360 Chat?

I use Turtle Beaches with my Xbox 360 and play voice and game sound through them. I select voice through headset in my preferences. My problem is that this morning I couldn't hear my friends through the headset when they were talking but they could hear me fine. I tried the official Xbox headset but I still couldn't hear them so I thought it might be my TV connections. I switched TV and I still couldn't hear them. I set the voice to play through TV speakers and I could hear them very faintly. Does anyone know why I can't hear my friends' voices through my headset? Is it something wrong with my Xbox or headset? Please help!!!!!!
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I did try 2 controllers. They can hear me clearly, and I can hear them kind of clearly when preferences is set to voice - play through speakers.
