Unfortunately you miss the point, the biggest thing a reliable vaccine will do is accelerate the herd immunity factor. Without one we will be living like this for years as waiting for nature to reach a herd immunity level will be a slow process. Until we reach the point that this virus is under control we will continue to have off and on restrictions and a devastated economy.

When someone doesn't get vaccinated it is harmful for more than yourself. But since everyone but me are epidemiologists, I'll defer to your knowledge. What I do know is that vaccines are literally a health care miracle,saving millions upon millions from premature death and terrible illness. For those of us old enough to have watched our elementary school class dwindle a little each year thanks to fatal diseases, we know this first hand.

Heard immunity by itself doesn't work, and that's the science talking. This virus is already reinfecting people and it's only been around for 8 months. Herd immunity concept for Covid-19 did not work in Sweden and Brazil. The science, facts and results have spoken. Case closed. Vaccine is the only way out now.

Herd immunity has never been achieved without a vaccine. That's why diseases continued unabated until we created vaccines. Vaccines were created so we could finally get to herd immunity. In general, vaccines have the lowest side effect rates and highest efficacy rates of any treatment/preventative therapy. Over the decades hundreds of millions of people have been vaccinated and the science behind these results is incredible. The numbers are just staggering. No other drugs have been used in such widespread numbers with such overwhelmingly positive results.

If we have enough "no thanks" people for the Covid vaccine, then we will continue to struggle with the disease. We need a very high percentage of the population to be vaccinated. There are other implications to the vaccine as well. As these SARS/Corona style viruses tend to be similar in structure, there is valid thought that this vaccine might be effective against other SARS viruses, and that would help prevent another pandemic over time. The terrible thing is that we started down the road to making a vaccine back when SARS first hit, but as it fizzled out, we stopped. FML. Let's no make this goof again.

The first thing I always want to ask people who say this is, if it cannot go from one person to another, where will it go to hide until the people come back out. Do they (the virus) go to some lookout tower and watch for the people to come back out and them go jump them?

Agree with you Bill. People hear new buzz words, like herd immunity, and like to sound intelligent by using them without understanding them. To get immunity, you need the bug in you so your system can create antibodies. Whether the virus is live or dead, your body reacts and creates antibodies. The difference is that the live one can grow but the dead ones can't. Therefore. I''d rater have the dead virus (the vaccine) in me than the live one. I guess the good news is that if people refuse the vaccine and don't care about spreading disease to others, THEY will be the ones to die and not the innocent ones actually trying to stop the spread.

People are not contagious for the rest of their lives. This is why a lockdown can work. After time, the virus dies within your body (or you die) and if during the period before that happens you don't come in contact with people, then you've limited the spread. The issue we have now is that we have so many people in all parts of society that are carriers, that even a pretty aggressive lockdown probably won't stop it. The other thing that locking down does is allow the health care system to deal with cases at a manageable rate.

One thing we need to rethink as we go forward is how fragile our society and economic systems are. We've undermined our ability to deal with a nation wide crisis to the point where we can barely sustain even a few weeks of economic inactivity. This means we need a major overhaul. The 41 wealthiest Canadians have enough wealth to have paid for the entire CERB program and then some. We have trillions of dollars sitting idle in personal wealth and corporate treasuries, contributing zero to the economy and zero to the national crisis at hand. Working class people are barely making it, or not making it, and governments have to go into massive debt to keep the nation barely afloat. Meanwhile, Canadian billionaires added $37B (and rising) to their personal wealth in the last eight months. "Oh, but they earned their billions, so leave them alone." No, they didn't. We ALL did.

Those billions were "earned" by using our labour. By using our roads and telecommunications systems and electrical grids and water and sewer systems. Those billions were earned by educated workers that are healthy thanks to publicly funded education and health care. We all did it, we all played a role, and only a few of us shared in the massive amounts of GDP generated in the last 40 years. This hoarding has to stop.

How many people skip the flu shot? A whole lot. Not dead.
You can take that stance but you’re making the human body seem pretty weak.
Take care of yourselves with proper food water exercise. The body is strong if allowed to be.
