are we seeing light at the end of the tunnel? we are back to where we were last year($2.39 average.) it be nice to see 87 @ $1.47 per gallon? it be a dream to see it fallen to .99 cents per gallon.

i think all the negative downfall started from our main resource, the grandaddy of them all, 'OIL.'

I read an article on the chicago sun-times a few days ago, where they claimed that the price of gasoline should stabilize at about $3 a gallon. To be honest Id be happy with that. and when and if it happens, the demands for hybrid cars should diminish and they should become more affordable. Right now one cant even expect to find a toyota prius readily available at the dealer here in Illinois!!

Just wanted to take this opportunity to remind my mongering friends of this little prediction Your Humble Brother-in-Arms made a couple of months ago when oil peaked at over $140 per barrel. It is now set to test $100 per barrel on the downside. Demand dropped (highly unusual for oil) and the supply caught up far faster than we expected. Let's hope that the falling price doesn't allow us to forget how important it is for us reduce and eventually eliminate our dependence on foreign oil.

MikeDude is right -- we won't run out in our life time. There are still some three trillion barrels of oil left as far as we can tell. We've used almost one trillion barrels in the past 200 years.

What we are running out of is cheap oil. It cost the Saudi's less than about $4 per barrel. It costs the Canadians between $40 and $60 per barrel for their oil sands oil. It costs the folks in our western states up to $70 per barrel for shale oil. Although increased production is important in the short term, we must, must, must, must, must, must learn to run this planet on far less oil. There is really no other choice. Our leaders are going to have to tell us the truth some day. Let's hope it is sooner rather than later. In the meanwhile, you as a consumer can make a big difference by simply educating yourself about what is coming to be known as your "carbon footprint." Can you carpool, bike, walk, take public transit, etc. one day per work week? Can you look at your diet and see what items are using the most energy and maybe eat one less per week or month or whatever? Can you buy less petroleum-based clothing and more cotton- and other plant-based -- oh, shit! This is too much!

Look, I apologize -- this is a monger forum. First things first -- let's get laid. Then we can worry about our carbon footprint.

Like I mentioned in my previous post, as long as there are market players the demand for oil(gas) will be strong. It's like an equation 1 + 1 = 2. The buyer and supplier. The rich people including prince of Saudi in the middle east are big investors on Wall st. Without the demand for oil, middle east will cease to exist. Big oil companies who are some of the biggest political money givers will cease to exist. No, the government won't allow that. They will do whatever it takes to keep that equation intact.

De acuerdo, Senor. You are absolutely right. It sure seems to be a commodities bubble right now. Of course, we won't know for a year or two or maybe even three how much a bubble it is. Economic bubbles can't last forever, whether it is stocks, or housing, or commodities -- eventually the supply catches up with the demand (or the demand falls to meet the supply). But I agree with you about the greed factor. There are always going to be those who will do whatever they can to manipulate the markets. Why? As that famous bank robber said, "Because that's where the money is!" The capitalist system and (so called) free markets aren't perfect, by any means. Does that mean we should scrap the current system and try something else? There are some who believe that but after the serious failures and shortcomings of many communist and socialist systems, most countries of the world have decided to put their faith in the capitalist model.

Wouldn't it be great if we could just somehow come up with an economic model the combined the efficiency of capitalism with the fairness of socialism where everybody could live comfortably and we wouldn't have to compete so viciously for resources? ("Damned stupid Utopian dreamer...")

Oh, yeah, and everybody gets laid regularly, too! Can't forget that!

Any great ideas? Please submit them the United Nations and the Nobel Peace Prize committee.

I would say do what my job does...Buy a couple of 5 gallon gas cans (company got a stock pile of cans and drums that we use and fill up.)and stock up so you can burn some of the gas u buy in TJ but not all of it and reload once u get home.

I myself rarely if ever drive into TJ unless I'm going somewhere else, as I find it better to park outside and walk and take a cab to the zona. This may be of no interest, but I have many years of managing gas stations. Each station has unique underground storage tanks, but generally those few stations that sell diesel have a tank of 2000 or 3000 gallons capacity.

This creates a problem when ordering, as you must order 9,000 gallons at one time and you order several days in advance.....If a station is getting more play than usual on the diesel it can run out quicker, but not be able to order as you have to have an order of 9,000....ie...4500 87 octane, 3500 91 octane, and 1000 diesel....If the tanker comes and you don't have room for the gas, you get fined. It must be difficult to figure with the surge of Americans coming across.

It would help that both grades and diesel are getting more action, but still must be a pain in the ass.

It's $2.20 a gallon for deisel.My job been loading up on TJ gas for the last year in half.

Yes I see this oil pike caused by pure market manipulation by the oil speculators and hedge funds. Where at the end of 2003 there was 13 billion in commodity index funds, but this year that amount has grown to $260 billion, and most of that is on margin of something like 6%. I guess Ken Lay is having the last laugh while burning in hell with the "Enron Loophole" he got the US government to agree to?

But man I'm tired of debating this subject as I do on other forums where the conservative position is to always open up ANWAR and drill off the coast of California and become oil independent. Yeah right whatever you say, let go kill baby seals and pollute the arctic, like that will solve all the problems?

Well, that was pretty insightful thoughts on the current state of American economy Gmbrldx. However here is my two cents.

Throughout the human history, where there is money to be made, there is always corruption and manipulation. People have been trying to look for the causes of this massive commodity price increases such as corn, rice, precious metals, and oil. Some say it's the fed's fault or the greedy oil company or the voracious appetite for commodities by the so called emerging markets like China, India, Brazil, etc. However, I think it all comes down to manipulation and greed by the market players. The Wall street crooks are at it again. Do you know how many commodity hedge funds have been created in the last several years ? Name any commodity and there probably is a hedge fund for it. And if there is a stock fund for it, the price of the commodity has to go up so that the stock price can go up as well. Anybody who's familiar with stocks and funds will understand what I am talking about. It's another dom.com mania of the late 90's. Greed is good - this used to be the motto of the dot.com era. People will artificially create a bubble to cash in at the right time. Well... IMHO.

Well, back to our subject..
Went to TJ last Friday to check out the scene. The monger traffic is definitely less than usual. Just a lot of locals. I went to CC and OMG !. What the hell happened at this place ? At around 10 PM, nothing much is going on. Even the quality of chicas are on a serious downhill. I remember this place used to have a lot of stunners and now it seems it's the thing of the past. Well, at least the bright side was that the car traffic to cross the border was way better than normal.
