Two Kettle Moraine High School graduates are getting into the massage roller business, and have their own unique design.
Steven Williams and Jessica Schultz have started Roll and Go, their own portable massage roller business. They are made to be lightweight and flexible, as well as made out of biodegradable and renewable materials.
Williams is currently an engineering student at Iowa State, while Schultz studies outdoor education with a double minor in environmental studies and environmental education at Northland College, located in Ashland in northern Wisconsin.
The idea was that of Schultz in November 2016, who talked about the need for a portable massage roller for her backpack, as she was an avid outdoors enthusiast, with Williams.
"There should be a smaller lightweight version of this so you can take it with you wherever," Schultz said.
Over Christmas break in 2016, Schultz said she and Williams went through different designs before choosing one and rolling with it. Currently, the business has a provisional patent, which is good until January 2018.
Roll and Go's design consists of a terra cord that can be bend so it could be folded and made smaller, with modules of different shapes and sizes strung on it.
"It's lighter, smaller, but you get the same effect out of it," Williams said.
The modules are also made so that they can be interchanged depending on the user's needs, as well as at different strengths of low, medium and high intensity.
"If you're massaging the back of your leg, it's going to need a different strength than your arm, let's say," Williams said. "You can change them out as you want them. You don't have to buy a whole new unit every time. You don't have to spend another $20. You can spend another $10 to get different ones (roller parts)."
After three months of prototyping, Williams said they have received a couple pre-orders, but have not yet began to sell the products. They are currently seeking to release the product August 7.
"I think if they realize that 'Yeah you're going to have to push yourself and it's going to hurt a little bit to do it', but there's ways to getting around those initial bumps," Williams said. "It doesn't matter how far you go, I guess. It's that you go."
Schultz said she and Williams are committed to their business long-term, even with being at separate schools and studying separate majors. That means starting with selling the product at smaller shops and working their way up. They are also thinking about specializing their products for specific groups such as rock climbers.
"We have hopes of going bigger and getting Target and Walmart and Amazon," Schultz said. "REI is a big one we want to get to."
