A massage business is moving into a major downtown Port Huron storefront.
Massage 325 owner Michelle Sheffer said she’s already begun work on the interior space at 227 Huron Ave., where Migardener was located before moving to St. Clair this year, and so far, she’s hosting clients there by appointment only with another massage therapist.
She was previously located above Suzanne’s clothing store for four years farther north up Main Street before she more recently looked to expand.
“I am actually looking for another massage therapist. I’m going from renting a room to a 1,400-square-(foot) space. It’s huge,” Sheffer said. “We’ve remodeled in there. We’ve added five rooms, including a sauna room.
“And not immediately, but sometime down the line, I’m going to add a pedi(cure) room. And I have a girl in there that does spray tan and lip blushing. All that is new.”
By sometime in October, Sheffer said she hopes to have the entire facility at 227 Huron open with storefront space, featuring her homemade products under the brand Be Joyful Goods, which is named for and in memory of her mother.
She has featured a variety of jewelry pieces and other products, such as unicorn sugar, goats’ milk, and other soaps and lip balms, on the brand’s Facebook and Instagram pages.
“I’m not fully stocked with all of the products and stuff,” Sheffer said. “But I am able to continue my massage business there right now.”
Earlier this week, Sheffer got the OK from the city’s Historic District Commission for new signage on the new storefront.
Commissioners Cheri Smith and Andrew Kercher said on Tuesday that the light-colored signage proposed fits in well with the historic block, including other retail, next to MI Passion Boutique and Kate’s Downtown.
Port Huron Downtown Development Authority Director Natacha Hayden said the large storefront will give Massage 325 more visibility with windows to display products and signage, as opposed to her last location, which was easy to miss. It'll also give downtown more retail options.
"It just goes to show we have a variety of stores and services offered downtown," Hayden said. "It makes downtown look alive."
