An Auburn man is facing rape and other charges after a woman reported to police that he sexually assaulted her during a massage at the nail salon he works at, officials said.
Bagher Jafari, 67, is accused of assaulting the victim during a 90-minute massage that she scheduled at Kayti Nails on Southbridge Street, according to documents filed in Worcester Central District Court.
The woman told Auburn police that a massage therapist she knew as "Bob" touched her breast and genitals during the massage on May 5, a police statement of facts filed earlier this month says.
"The victim told me that she never consented to any of these inappropriate/sexual contacts," the statement reads. The assault was reported on May 5 and the victim was interviewed by police on May 10.
Police later identified "Bob" as Jafari, of 135 Prospect St. in Auburn.
Jafari was arraigned on Monday for charges of rape, and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a person older than 14. He was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to return to court on July 24.
When given his Miranda rights and interviewed by police about the alleged incident, Jafari told police that he gave the victim a massage, but his account of the events did not include details of the assault.
A man who answered the phone at Kayti Nails said he did not know of anyone with the name Bagher Jafari working there. When asked if the salon would want to make a comment about the charges an employee is facing, the man said the owner was not in and no one else could comment.
Jafari faced similar charges in Franklin in 2004, police said, but those charges were dismissed.
Police said that Jafari is a licensed massage therapist through the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Massage Therapy.
Based on interviews with the victim and Jafari, Auburn police believe the assault happened during the massage on May 5, the statement of facts says.
"At no time did the victim consent to any of these inappropriate sexual acts," the statement says.
