WOBURN - A massage therapy business will be moving a few blocks north on Main Street in Woburn Center after the City Council at its most recent meeting approved a special permit.
China Massage Spa will relocate from 325 Main St. to 446 Main St., the former site of another massage therapy business, according to Lei Song, the owner of China Massage Therapy.
To its approval, the council added a condition that the hours of operation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Ward 4 Alderman Michael Anderson, whose district includes 446 Main St., reminded Song she and all her employees must be licensed massage therapists.
Robert Zaia, who said he is Song's business adviser, said Song requested the move due to her proximity to a restaurant that he said is disruptive to the massage therapy business' customers.
"It's not conducive to the clients' well-being," said Zaia, citing noise as the primary factor.
China Massage Therapy maintains two or three licensed therapists and has been in operation at 325 Main St., just off Woburn Square, for three-and-half years, Zaia noted.
"She is excited to move to the new location," he added.
The 325 Main St. location is in Ward 2, the alderman of which is Richard Gately, who said he has never fielded a complaint about the business.
"You wouldn't even know (Song was) there," he said.
City Council President Richard Haggerty advised Song she is eligible to apply with the Woburn Redevelopment Authority for a grant of as much as $7,500 for new sign for the business at the new location.
"We want the signage to be terrific downtown," said Haggerty.
No one from the audience spoke during the public hearing.
