Monger Street Advertising

Just curious as to whether there was any advertising passed out on the streets in the gulch as to locations of clusb, massage, escorts, call girls etc.

In Vegas you find them on almost every corner and I found it was a good way for pros, semi-pros, as well as amateurs to advertise their availability.

This is quite common in London as well, but there they use a street bulletin board to stick up their "business cards."

On this same subject, are there personals in the Tico Times or other English lanquage newpapers, where chicas can advertise their availability along with a cell phone number.

Even while asking the questions, I'm already guessing that doesn't go here because the government would rather keep this particular aspect of tourism quiet.

Stan...you wont see much of that kind of promotion here in CR. While prostitution is legal here...pimping has heavy penalties and is strongly enforced. Handing out these flyers would be construed as pimping...so everyone avoids it.

You CAN find personals or post personal in the Ticotimes and La Nacion newspapers. Many gentlemen report hundreds of phone calls in response to personal ads for companionship or live ins.

IN general, you dont need this advertising to find plenty of company around San Jose.

Some of the taxi drivers will pass out cards for the high-end strip clubs like Puro Platinum or Elite but all that does is jack up the prices for you and get a commission for them.

As said before, you will hardly find that kind of information on the street, better read the newspaper or just ask..

They are taking all of the sigs down in San Jose. Places are really goining to be hard to find. MOst of them have disappeared already. SEAHAWK

You mean they actually HAVE signs in CR!? I've always gone by
directions such as '20 meters past the futbol (soccer) field', 'the
yellow house 40 meters past the green church', etc. Of course,
if they paint the house or church in the example above a different
color, good luck finding the place!

NF cards

When New Fantasy was still open, I had a barker hand me a buisness card for the place and tried to talk me into checking it out. I told the guy I had been there half a dozen times, including that morning! Two hours later, I run into the same guy half way across town still handing out NF cards to gringos...

Start going by the color or availability of toilet paper in each one? I'm amazed that Fedex or UPS can ever deliver a package.

We just have to get over it. They aren't going to change. It does surprise me that cab drivers can't figure out an address like Avenida 9 entre Calle 9 y Calle 11 sometimes. They leave us lost.

I've tried repeatedly to get a straight answer about the location of the restaurant that the chef from the German Club opened, and all I know is that it is in Barrio Escalante. 200 M from an unknown location is useless to me. This probably isn't the place for this question, but can anybody give me gringo directions to this place? The food at the German Club was excellent, and I have heard good things about the new place, but I don't know how to find it.

San Jose directions

One of the cabbies with whom I rode told me that drivers must take a street geography test as part of the taxi licensing process. I find it hard to believe, but he swore it's true. He also told me that he forgot everything he studied as soon as he took the test. It is true that the taxistas do not know street names, numbers or the grid layout; most of them however have the uncanny knack of remembering the most obscure landmarks imaginable. Most of the MP's for instance can be found either in relation to the CocaCola, central Park, Tinjo or Amon Plaza, and most cabbies will know the major streets and avenues. This makes it weird. How is it that a cabbie will know Avenida 9 and Avenida 2, but won't know Avenida 5? it doesn't compute.
