Monkey Bar

I was told that the bar directly accross the street from BM is Monkey Bar. Is that the same as New York Bar?

No the NYB is down the street toward the Presidente-Calle 9 I think.

The Monkey Bar and the New York bar are 2 different bars. The Monkey Bar is on Avenida 1 directly across from the BM. The New York bar is on Calle 9. Come out of the Del Rey hotel entrance and you are on Calle 9, turn left go 1/2 block and the New York bar is on the left side of the street.

And as a patron of both, I recommend either as a breather from the intensity of the Blue Marlin. You are more likely to see some working girls in the Monkey Bar, though you'll see them in the New York bar too. Good pool tables in the Monkey bar but generally a bit more dead than the NY bar.

Bilko...whatever happened to Larry 'Bud' Melman? I remember him
from the Letterman show. He was hilarious! One time he was interviewing
someone at the Port Authority bus station, and he got confused. When he
would speak, he'd put the microphone in front of the other person and vice

Most guys know that the Monkey Bar is owned by Big John and is one of what is now 7 bars that are part of the Del Rey / Key Largo complex. What I did not know until my last trip is that at some point the Del Rey now requires girls coming to the Dr in the afternoon to first go over to the Monkey Bar, buy a drink and bring the receipt back to the DR before they are allowed to enter.

When I was first told this I did not believe it, then I saw it taking place repeatedly. I think it is a greedy practice however it is Big John's business and I guess it is just another "profit center" for him.

I am not sure they are still trying to enforce that policy about the girls buying a drink at the Monkey Bar. I was there last night and saw quite a few girls entering the del rey and none came into the Monkey Bar to buy a drink. Maybe they were just coming back in after servicing a client, but none of them stopped in the MB. It was quite dead last night too, just me, 3 pool players and the girls who work there.

Several years back before the several immigration raids...which has scared off and deported many ladies...the Delrey was packed every night . Especially on the weekends, it was so packed that the Monkey Bar was used as a holding tank of ladies waiting to get into the Delrey. On several ocassions my favoritas, arriving late to work, would get a hold of me and asked me to escort her in to the Dey Rey because the security guys wouldn't let her in until there's more room...and she was asked to wait at the Monkey Bar.

As for the ladies buying a drink first at the Monkey bar, it is still being enforce but not all the time. Several ladies have told me about it that it is still being done. Also once inside the DR, I was also told that the bartenders will not sell water to the working ladies but they must buy alcoholic drinks. I wanted to get Karol (Tica) a bottle of water but she said that the waitress would not sell her one unless I buy it for myself and then give it to her. Again, this policy is probably not enforce all the time. DR must be hurting for business.

Personally I have found the Monkey Bar to be more relaxing and a place to get more attention sometimes when the BM was packed, hot and sweaty. THe girls tending bar there are usually more friendly than the Key Largo bartendresses...and some of them have been known to "date" gringos out of the bar (i have dated 2 of them back when). The pool tables are nice and it is generally a nice place to go get to know your lady pulled out of the Delrey, OR find a stray one there...sometimes a bit cheaper.

This coupon thing for the Delrey girls MUST be off and on...for sure not at all times.

spent a lot of my three day stay in april in the monkey bar.....the bar-maid's were friendly and it was nice to chill,play pool and watch people entering the delray.....got on very well with stephanie a blond tica(her father is norwegian),Also had a blast with illiani(Lovely mouth) and a little honey-bunny called nellsi.........my buddy was ga-ga over yancee...............

I concur with the friendliness of the bartenders at the MB. About two
years ago I was with a Tica favorita and wanted a change from the
BM. We spent about two hours at the MB. It was not very busy at
the time. The bartenders were throwing things back and forth, and at
one point, two of them got on top of the bar and started to whip each
other!

For what it is worth, I was told that the Del Rey only requires working girls to go to the Monkey Bar and buy a drink during the afternoon;' not in the evening. I did see a lot of girls being turned around in the afternoon but did not see this happening in the evening. Vegas Bob told me about it and at first I was skeptical - then I saw it repeatedly but only in the afternoons.
