SUDBURY — Synasoma Massage Therapy, a newly opened business on Boston Post Road, is aiming to help those in the area with issues such as chronic headaches, back pain and rotator cuff injuries.
The business is a partnership between co-owners Joe Frazer and Anna Gammal, who each have more than 20 years of massage therapy experience.
"We realized we were running similar businesses separately," Frazer said. "To grow would be very hard by ourselves, so we decided to partner up."
Frazer said it can be difficult to expand in the business - massage therapists often end up working with one of the franchises or having to handle all the hassles of running a small business themselves. By joining together, he said, the Synasoma owners are hoping to sidestep many of those issues.
Frazer said Synsoma works to provide positive change through massage, beyond just the relaxation typically associated with the practice.
"We go to companies to provide on-site wellness, helping employees with repetitive stress conditions and chronic headaches - it can be very effective," he said. "If you can alleviate an issue before it becomes severe, you can see a big cost savings."
The two said they also work with many athletes. Gammal, according to a company release, organized and led the massage team at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and Synasoma has provided therapy at events such as the Boston Marathon, the Ragnar Reach and Beach Relay and the Sharon Timlin Memorial Road Race.
"On the athletic end, it's exciting," Frazer said. "It's a lot of fun working with world-class athletes. They have a lot of drive and determination, and they're very motivated.
Frazer said there is some crossover in treating athletes and the typical office worker - in both cases, he said, strain is caused by repetitive motion.
Another focus of the business, said Frazer, is massaging those currently undergoing treatment for cancer. He said massage can help allay the discomfort caused by treatment and may help boost immune function.
The Sudbury location was chosen for several reasons, including available space and proximity to clients, Frazer said.
"Anna's lived in the Hopkinton area for 20 years, and a lot of her clientele is from Framingham," he said.
The business - at the Wayside Plaza at 730 Boston Post Road - held a open house last month and has recently opened up its schedule to begin seeing clients. For more information, call 603-668-8181 or visit www.massagebook.com/biz/synasoma-sudbury.
