Numbess and Tingling in hands at night

I have been doing massage therapy for about a year now -- and the last three months have been very full with new clients (for which I am extremely grateful!)

However, I am now experiencing numbness and tingling in my hands -- only at NIGHT. On one hand, it is the thumb and forefinger, and on the other the pinkie and two adjoining fingers. As a massage therapist (and loving it!) this makes me nervous.

I would be so grateful for any input on this . . . and I do remember a post about the "No Hands Massage" from someone who has taken the courses. Sorry, I can't find the thread on that!

I also have a client who complains of numbness in her hands at night -- any additional massage techniques you can suggest I try for her? Sherry

I'm posting on the fly - no time for lots of details right now - but check your posture (always) and your body mechanics while doing massage. Also, stretch your pecs (elbows in the doorway and walk forward) really good, and the scalenes. On the side where the numbness is at the pinky, stretch your teres minor and major. A chiropractor could also be very helpful, if your acromioclavicular joint needs to be realigned - but stretching the tightened muscles could do it for you if it is pretty minor.

Sherry, how often do you get massage? I'm with Rose of Sharon, you might want to include stretches, self-massage, aromatherapy, massage and chiropractic to your self-care measures. You might find a CTS brace helpful if you are one who tends to experience your symptoms mostly at night. I hope you're able to find relief from your symptoms soon!

If you aren't getting regular massage work for yourself, I can't stress it enough that you do. 2.5 years in I had multiple issues with my forearms that almost stopped me from doing massage. I get regular massage work every other week and have no issues now. Almost 10 years and going strong...

Thank you, Rose of Sharon, Maestra and Masthera!

I am now wondering if this might be a reoccurence of TOS (the symptoms can also mimic CTS) which I dealt with about a year and a half ago. At that time a wonderful MFR Therapist helped me solve the problem in just a few sessions. Methinks I need to do self-cares more often as you all reminded me! Thanks for the nudge!

Sherry, I've had a couple times in the past 9 years where I've developed CTS like symptoms. My Chiro felt it was CTS and Brachial Plexus Syndrome and after a few MFR treatments and chiro adjustments... along with a couple weeks of rest, I was back to normal. I hope you're able to get some help with it soon!

I think some self-cares are definitely in order. I plan to see an MFR therapist -- but really hadn't considered a chiro (though I have one.) You would consider both beneficial whether it is TOS, CTS or the Brachial Plexus causing my hand problems?

BTW, is there already a thread (haven't found it yet) on MFR? I would love to know how many therapists on the forum practice MFR, their comments, and who they received MFR training from.

I am going to opt for the possible recurrance of Thoracic Outlet.

Get yourself taken care of, be it manipulation or bodywork. I'd vote for some good two weeks of regular bodywork.

I'm going to go for TOS too. If it was CTS you wouldn't get ulnar nerve paresthesia in your thumb and (I'm assuming lateral side of) your first finger. You'd also probably get symptoms during the day and pain while doing treatment if it was CTS. Get someone to do the Thoracic Outlet Special Tests on you to rule out which compression site it is and then go have it treated!
