Okay so call me cheap, but....

When I seen those drape face covers in the MW catalog for $5.99 I fell over laughing. I went down to Wal-mart and bought a yard of fleece for $4.44. Using my face rest cushion as a guide, I just laid it on the fleece making sure I left about 4 inches around it so it would drape over the whole face rest. I then cut up the middle to about an inch shy of the edge of the inside of the face rest and then cut a little to each side (basically a T). Not removing any material, just making the cuts. Ya know what? Viola!! A draping face rest cover that so far the clients I have have loved cause it's "so soft". I got 6 of them outta that yard of fleece at a cost of .74 cents each. I LOVE BEING CHEAP!!!! As long as my clients are comfy that is t043

The MT I worked with washed them every time they were used. If the edges curl up you can sew the edges with an overlock stitch or a zigzag near the edge.

: Dodab you are a person after my own heart!!! The fleece table covers are a ridiculously overpriced item as well... buy 2 yards of artificial fleece, wash them well, either hang the fabric up to dry or let it run through the dryer for a short time... measure the width of your table, make the appropriate measurements on the fleece, cut, stitch the edges if you want to, and either attach "strings", elastic straps, or, my personal favorite, sheet garters [$2.34/Walmart for 4] And it can be done, including "strings" elastic, or sheet garters for less than $30 if you find the fleece on sale like I do.

Just take the fleece off and wash it regularly and when it finally gets worn [took mine a few years] just repeat!

Another thing that works for the faceplate covers is thick jersey fabric although you really do have to zigzag the edges to keep them from looking all snarky.

Yeah....I just throw the cradle covers in the washer and dryer. Haven't had any curled edges yet. Forgot to mention the wash the fleece first part though to make sure it sizes right....thanks for the reminder on that Anastasia....that way you cut it after shrinkage and not before.

Was wondering how I was gonna cheat my way with the table cover. Thanks for that also Anastasia! :wink:

A great feeling about buying and using PolarTec fleece is that it is a Made In America product from a Massachusetts company that stood by its workers when the mill burned down, paid them their full salaries the whole time while rebuilding and then put them back to work.

Glad to be of help Twylight.... it's better to find a cheap solution to the need for items for the office than to go without them, and, it gives you more of a "pamper" for your clients when you are tight for cash.

its so fun too be creative and say money to boot!...i make the same face drape, sometimes i cut the shape w/ pinking shears, other times i sew a decorative zigzag stitch around the edges to help it not to curl.

i use a fitted face cradle cover that i do not remove, and then use the drape cover over that. the fitted cover helps to keep the drape cover in place. it's so much faster to whip off the drape to replace it, and the polar fleece washes up really nice. i buy my polar fleece as remmants whenever i can, especially off-season.

I do the same as Palms, and I make a point of looking for the heavyweight polar fleece (same smooth texture both sides) in dark colors. No more ruined covers from mascara and makeup. It washes up fine, pilling after about 20 or so washes and then I just make new ones. I don't need to use pinking shears OR sew the heavyweight stuff as it doesn't fray or curl.

I can't see paying for these. That's ridiculous!

I currently use fitted face cradle covers. I have thought of using flats because they would be easy to make, but I like the fitted covers simply because they dont fall on the floor when the face cradle is not up. Those of you who use a fitted cover AND a flat on top, does the flat stick to the fitted cover when the face cradle is down?? Also, the flat completely covers the fitted one?? I would think that would be akin to layering sheets to save time changing linens.... or am I thinking this through incorrectly??

The flat one completely covers the fitted one on top and inside the face area. The far edge along the outside may not be completely covered, but nothing is touching this area anyway.

The fitted one is there both to cover my fleece cradle cover and help hold the flat one in place. When the cradle is in the dropped down position I place the flat cover, still neatly folded from laundering, on top of the open U end so it is there when I am ready to flip the client and raise the cradle to the upright position (I prefer to start face-up most times). It would probably stay in place pretty well laid flat and already in position but I'm bound to brush it off with a leg while working, so I leave it folded over the open U.

On the table I change the fitted covers every other client and flat ones with every client. When doing chair, I don't use the fitted cover at all so that I can wipe down the vinyl after each client (because the flat cover will shift without a fitted cover under it and with that many people in heavy makeup channeling through I want to clean more often). People like the flat covers because the soft thickness covers the seams of the fitted one and avoid lines. Chair clients like it because the thickness avoids lines, too, and it feels so much softer and nicer than the usual paper towel, nurses' cap or flat paper cover alternatives.

I am just estatic!! This is a wonderful idea!! I went to walmart and bought 2 yards of white fleece for $4.44 a yard. I cut these 2 yards into 15 face cradle covers for a grand total of 59 cents a piece. It took me about 45 minutes to cut them up. I didnt pre wash the material, it isnt the kind to shrink. I tried them out on 3 clients and all three preferred them to my fitted face cradle covers because they are soooo soft and also because they are much more comfortable than the fitted ones. The fleece flats lay so much better and dont come back at your face like the fitted ones do.

I will try my best to explain how I cut this two yards up. The material I bought was about 55 inches wide. If your material is a different width, this may not work for you.

First off, this two yards of material is ONE piece!! You will have a piece of felt approximatly 4.5 feet by 6 feet. First, trim off all the salvage ends. Next, on a short side of the piece of fleece ( the 4.5 foot side) cut off 15 inches of the fleece. Take this piece of material and fold it evenly so you have 3 layers of fleece. Your folded piece of material should measure approximatly 15 inches by 18 inches. Cut on the folds to seperate your face cradle covers. Take one of your fleece rectangles and cut a "Y" shape into the center of the fleece. Your "Y" should be cut into the longer side. The first cut should be about 9 inches long. The top parts of the "Y" will be about 3 inches long. Repeat with the other fleece retangles.

Now, for the remaining part of the material, which is now about 4.5 feet by 4.75 feet. Fold the fleece over on itself 3 times. SInce the fabric is almost a square, it doesnt matter much which way you fold it. You want three layers of fleece evenly folded. Cut the fleece on the folds. Keep the fleece folded while you cut and you will have a fairly straight cut.

Take one piece of this fleece and fold it in half. Cut on the fold. Fold one more time and cut again. Repeat with the other long pieces of fleece.

Cut the "Y" into each piece and you are done.

When I get time, I will photograph the procedure as I cut them out.
