Paraffin Dips: Are they actually requested?

I just started working at a salon about 5 weeks ago. Gathering clients has been really slow moving, but I'm doing lots of marketing and revamping my massage menu.

One item that I saw at a trade show was Paraffin Dips, however my boss shot the idea down as soon as I said it. Is this not something clients order anymore? I'm really looking for a simple add-on, something that I could do while the client's hair color processes. Or I could have it during a massage like was suggested in other threads.

I live in Ohio and it gets fairly cold and dry around here during the winter months. Several hair clients that have been here, I have given hand massages, and they have had extremely dry skin. I would think this would be a great service for them, as well as for those with arthritis.

I'm lookng for recent (in the past year) information about paraffin dips and whether clients really want to add this to a service. I was thinking $10 for hands or feet as an add-on.

I personally LOVE paraffin treatments and have thought about offering them as an add-on too. They probably wouldn't be the biggest money-maker in the shop, but I'm sure there would be enough demand to make it worthwhile to offer.

Having been in the spa environment for over 6 yrs I can say that in my experience NO ONE has ever requested this service.

By all means offer it...if you make it special it might catch on with some clients.
But I would caution not to invest too much of yourself
or in product.

It is usually given as a freebie.

Oh well. I went to a hair show over the weekend, with the people in my salon, one table offered Paraffin dips. And it was brought up in 2 business classes I took. I thought it might be an idea to move into some spa treatments, though I am just feeling this out right now.


Anyone else have anymore information?? Thanks for your comments

I have worked in Day Spas in the past, and I don't recall people specifically asking for Parrafin Dips. Mainly, I believe it is because they don't know about them, and they aren't displayed as anything special or exotic.

I find that spa clientele (who aren't regulars), tend to want something exotic they wouldn't normally have. So, much of it is in presentation.

"Ohhhh, we have this nice lovely seaweed wrap. It will detoxify your system and is followed by a hydrating massage." And, usually it's pricy.

So, it may be that if you bump up the price a bit, make it feel more exotic and present it in the right way, you'll get more people to bite.

You could present it as something like this:

Parrafin Spa Treatment
The paraffin wax treatments is a luxurious way moisturize and soften the skin. It is particular popular in the winter. Your hands or feet will be bathed in warmth and a dimension of aromatherapy may be added to the experience. Dry, cracked heels and knuckles may be diminished in as few as three sessions. You may also wish to engage in paraffin sessions to reduce aches and pains.

I have never had anyone specifically ask for a paraffin treatment. The clients who love them are my 70+ year olds who I give a free hand treatment with their massage. Even so, only 2 clients out of 10 ALWAYS make time to receive it. The others are rushing to appts or engagements or home to care of their spouses. I have used it as a marketing tool though. For holiday sales when ppl are looking for smaller fee deals I sell a hand paraffin treatment with a 15 min hand massage for $15. I sold 3 of them and 2 rebooked for fullbody massage. You can see from the numbers, it isn't something on demand here, but I did move my warmer to my Moms when I went mobile for both of us to use. Me and my hands love it!

I charge $12 for a dip and it doesn't add extra time on to the session. In November, I am going to charge $5 per dip and donated the whole $5 to a local charity. I will have paper cut outs of hands and feet for people to write their name on and tape them up around the office. I will be pushing this like crazy.

At our business, "spa" services are always the least-requested and least likely to be repeated. They are always very appreciated by those who try them, but I've never seen anyone get hooked on any of them. It seems odd, but that's been our experience so far. Spa services that well-meaning people have frequently requested usually don't do well when they become available... even those who suggest/request the services rarely rush to take advaneforum.xxxe of them.

That said, we have found it helpful to offer some specialized spa-type services. It helps differentiate us from the competition and gives our regular clients some variety to choose from. Even if they don't sample everything on the menu, I've noticed that many people like to think about trying other options, and for some that alone is enough.

We are careful not to offer any services that we do not have well-qualified people available to provide. Only those with the proper qualifications are permitted to provide those services. We pull services from the menu if we lose the MT(s) who were able to support the service.

The charity paraffin dipathon is going great! As of today, I have already raised $175 for my favorite charity. Nearly every one of my sessions has included at least one set. Most just take one, a few have taken a double dip, hands AND feet in one session! I have had 38 appointments, and that $175 equates to 35 dips.

I think the price gets them more than the charity part. I may have to have a paraffin sale every once in a while. I know the wax and bags did not cost anywhere near $175, so even at $5 a pop, it is still a money maker.

I did make signs to go up, but they only have a hand outline on them. Under the hand it says, "I gave a helping hand to the XYZ Charity."

54 dips for a grand total of $270 for the charity.

As the month went on, I had repeat clients, and some of the repeats declined a second dip. About half a dozen clients chose a double dip, that is, hand and feet.

I think a lot of my clients took me up on the offer not because of the charity, but because of the price. I believe I will drop the price of a dip in the new year and offer it a few times a year for $5, but not for a charity every time.
