pdf files & Facebook chat on Ipad ?

1. can any e-book (pdf file) downloaded off the web (torrents) be transferred to Ipad and read as a normal book in it's reader ?

2. when I was in Bestbuy the last time and I tried Ipad (first gen) I couldn't load chat on Facebook page. Is it possible and how ?

these two issues are what's stopping me from buying Ipad (well along with the annoying non support of Flash but that's another story). Still I'd like to know the answers to the above two questions.
