Problem with MSN, can't chat to people :(?

Hey all, my friend is having a problem with with MSN. She can log in but when she clicks on a contact she cant start a conversation. Either this or it shows everyone as offline, when she know they're online. Also, if they start a conversation with her she's unable to reply. I have no idea whats up with it, haven't been able to help her at all. Any ideas what the problem is. Shes on a toshiba laptop and has the latest version of messenger. She did mention something about linking her account to facebook and the problems started.
