I had the same experience as you Frazier as once I had problems with my stomach and the US doctors didn't offer much help so my mother-in-law took me to her doctor in Tijuana, and I was impressed by the level of service and the tests they gave me for the low amount of money which seems to run about one third of the cost they do in the states, and they seem to offer you more than a typical HMO in the states.

Americans are typically scared of any kind of Medical care in Mexico, if they feel they are having a heart attack in Tijuana there first instinct is I got to get back over the border and see a American hospital, and I bet they are saying to themselves if I die I rather die in America?

I myself chickened out the next time I needed medical care. A dental implant where in the US insurance won't cover it, and it's about $2000 dollars in the states and another $400 or so for cap which the insurances will cover. IN Tijuana dental implants are around $800 dollars and the cap another $100 but I instead missed my appointment in Tijuana and went with an American Specialist who did a very good job for me but it was over $2000 dollars.

I think the important thing in Tijuana is to have references because just like in the US Mexico has it's share of butcher. In fact my Mexican auto mechanic was just telling me he got his hernia operation in Tijuana for $5000 instead of $15,000 in the US as he didn't have insurance, but the $5000 job wasn't good and now he has to go back to another better doctor in Tijuana to fix it.

For those wanting good medical care in Tijuana I suggest Angeles Hospital. It's in Zona Rio close to where Paseo de los Hereos and Sanchez Toabada join. It has twin towers, one of which is the hospital and the other is where many doctors have their offices.

Some of their physicians (like the doctor who does their heart surgeries) also practice in the US. The last I knew about 25% of their patients come from the US. They take many US insurances and when I last investigated the place they were in the process of getting Medicare accreditation. You'll usually find somebody who speaks English to help you if you don't speak Spanish.

The emergency room is well staffed and open 24 hours. This is the place I'd go for a medical emergency while in Tijuana.

The same thought of having medical exams or small procedures done in Mexico crossed my mind too. I'm the same age as you and found my insurance costs climbing to $600 bucks a month as well without any issues or problems in my past either. What a rip! Fu_king insurance companies and lawyers that brought us to this point. Anyway, I have seen a lot of documentaries and read many articles about more and more people traveling out of the country for medical procedures and combining vacations with it. Sounds pretty cool, but I would have to have some very serious references about the doctor and hospital....and I mean serious, verifiable references. There's no difference in that and wearing condoms! Life or death baby. Oh yea, I'd like to thank Frazier for his helpful tips on TJ. It made the difference in a fun time and a not so fun time. Strolling around the Zona on any given night I see quite a few mongers around my age 50- 60. Medical costs in the US are skyrocketing, my monthly went up to near $600 two years ago, without any serious illness or claim. Decided to put money in my own medical account monthly instead of giving it to a HMO. My father died of prostate cancer, my older brother has had his removed. Being the only monger left in the family knew I had to keep it up for em. It had been 3 years since my last PSA test and exam so knew I was overdue. Costs of private Urology in the US are crazy so decided to do a search in TJ. Already have a great dentist of 5 years on 4th ave so was not put of by bad press in SD. Did an internet search, selected what I thought was the best bloke and went to see him. His surgery was immaculate, central down town. I have had a few prostate exams in the States but never one as thorough as this. PSA test, ultra sound, flow test with read out, rectal exam, $150. This guy is very professional, had my PSA result the next day. All good except for slight benign enlargement, prescribed Secotex 3 month treatment. Was over the moon went straight down to the Zona and gave the gland a good work out.
