Puerto Viejo de Tamalanaca action

Me and A few buddies are going over to the Carribean side for the first time. We are going to spend a few nights in Puerto Viejo. Is there any action in this town, strip clubs, bars? Is it worth venturing over to Panama for a day trip?

Puerto viejo is like a small jamaica, is a very nice place like paradise, at nights near the beach is usually to find disco bars, and the weed is every were, for sure you are gone to spend a very nice time there but is better if you can bring some girls with you, or perhaps you found them there.
Any way enjoy it and have a nice stay in our caribean side.

I was thinking of checking out Puerto Viejo on my next trip. Just 2 questions, is it relatively safe there?. is knowledge of Spanish necessary or is there a fair amount of English spoken?.

I would be traveling there alone and just want to be on the safe side.

You will find Puerto Viejo fairly safe and more rather than less English is spoken on the Caribean coast as a creole form of English is the native language for that part of Costa Rica.rbc100

Puerto Viejo - What one can expect to find there.

I visited Puerto Viejo for about 24 hours back in November of 2005.

It is a nice little village on the Caribe (Atlantic Ocean side of CR).
Here are my observations:
Lots of little hotels & cheap cabinas, restaurants, bars, nice clean long beach.....good for sunbathing. Town mostly inhabited by English speaking crejole types. & young tourists. Lots of walking, bicycling, or rent a motorbike and go down the beach.

Visitors mostly young 20-25 year old college types from USA, Europe, and around. Lots of young backpacker couples........

Chicas for sexo were hard to find. I did find one ole black pimp who rode around town on a bicycle who was willing to set me up with a date.....my choice of either a white girl, or a black girl....he wanted about 2,000 c. upfront and then the girls would want another 8 - 10,000 c. to go back to my hotel room for an hour or so.

He was none too trustworthy looking so I passed on the whole idea, had some supper and went back to my hotel for a good nights rest.
Took the first bus out of town the next morning back to San Jose.

My recommendation:
If you are a young male backpacker type then this may be the place for you, as you might be able to pickup on some the nice looking college aged gals from Europe or the US. Older guys will do far better to skip Puerto Viejo all together unless you bring your own woman, and just want to go to a pretty beach area spend some relaxing time just 'chilling out' here. I have to agree with Steve here. Puerto Viejo is a cool little town and the beaches are nice, some good restaurants, but the backpacker and drug scene is alive and well. I would say it is worth an overnight trip, or weekend, but it would be better to bring your sand to this beach. :wink:

Thanks for the info. We are heading that way to parcue river for a rafting trip and are going to stay a couple of nights. It will be a good break from the GULCH. Our trip begins and ends at the DR.
