Silver Spring man charged with sexually assaulting customer during massage
A Silver Spring massage therapist has been charged with sexually assaulting a customer, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. Habtamu Gebreselassie, 24, is accused of assaulting a woman during a massage Sunday at Massage Envy on Wisconsin Avenue in Tenleytown. Gebreselassie said he'd done nothing wrong, but a judge ordered him held without bail. He was charged with first-degree sexual abuse of a patient. [NBC4]
Vignarajah launches Democratic bid for state governor
Gaithersburg resident Krishanti Vignarajah officially kicked off her gubernatorial campaign Tuesday near an apartment complex in Baltimore. Vignarajah lived in the apartment community after her family fled Sri Lanka when she was a child. Vignarajah, former policy director for first lady Michelle Obama, said sheโd make mandatory paid family leave for new mothers and fathers, universal prekindergarten and education leading concerns if she is elected governor. Vignarajah, 37, is running for the Democratic nomination. [Washington Post]
Toys 'R' Us files for bankruptcy
Toys 'R' Us is planning to borrow millions of dollars to buy merchandise for the holidays after it filed for bankruptcy Monday. After hearing reports that the company is in financial distress, its vendors have recently been refusing to send items like Barbie dolls and Lego blocks without cash in advance. A court Tuesday granted the company permission to borrow $2 billion to pay the vendors. The company hopes to stock up in preparation for the holiday season and the fourth quarter, which accounts for 40 percent of its net sales. Though the company, which has a store in Gaithersburg, has a plan for financial recovery, the bankruptcy has thrown its future into question. [Reuters]
MCPS officials break ground on Seneca Valley High
Work started this week on what will be the largest public high school in the state. The replacement building for Seneca Valley High School in Germantown is expected to open in the fall of 2020. Superintendent Jack Smith said it will have space for about 2,400 students. Officials said it will be the largest high school by square footage in Maryland. The building will have four stories and about 440,000 square feet. [WTOP]
Cloudy, warm weather expected
The Wednesday forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies and highs of about 86 degrees. The clouds are expected to clear later in the day, according to the National Weather Service. Overnight, temperatures could dip into the 60s.
