Some help for a newbie

I am about to head off on my first trip to San Jose. I was booked, not my choice, at the Best Western Irazu. I have no idea where that is in comparison to the various places mentioned here. Am I out in the sticks?? Are any of the places you mention (ie Zona Blue etc) near? Cabs aren't a problem from the hotel, but is it so far out that it will be difficult to get back?? Before you laugh, it happened to me in Beijing.

It is not close to the Gulch at all. I suggest you do a search on "Best Western Irazu" as there have been many threads on this particular hotel.
AFAIK it is very nice but not sure about chica friendly.

The bar there used to have decent drink specials, but no chicas. I met a Tico friend who lived in the neighborhood for a few once. It is easy to get a cab from there.

While the BW Irazu is not in the gulch it is not that far a cab ride and you should not have a problem getting a cab to get you back and forth. Just make sure the first few cabs you take use there meter, so you get a good idea of how much the fare should be, then you can negotiate with cabs who do not want to use the meter when you are coming back at night.

My understanding is that the hotel is chica friendly and the distance from the gulch is not an issue with the girls. At one time they had a shuttle service into San Jose. If they still have that and you can coordinate your time with there schedule you will only have to taxi one way.

I stayed there on my first trip. I had never heard of CRT (joined VIP as soon as I got back) and booked it because it was part of a web based package deal. I have no complaints. It was just as you would expect a Best Western to be. Nice, clean, and quiet. To be honest, I didn't really know what I was doing that first trip, so I didn't even try to take a chica back, so I don't know what the fees might be. However, I got the feeling it was no big deal to bring someone back, it just didn't happen that often.
