Foot Emergencies

I do a foot soak before every treatment to avoid this problem all together. For new clients, it is something for them to do while filling out their intake forms. For repeat clients I let them soak in the room alone for about 5 minutes. It is a time for them to unwind and clean their stinky or dirty feet all at the same time.

All of my clients just love it!!!

One of our teachers had mentioned a client that had very, very, very, VERY nasty body odor, foot odor. He said she seemed like a very clean indivisual, just had a particularly strong brand of body odor. And of course, would use perfume to ease it up and end up making it worse.

What he suggested was using some tact. Something along the lines of using very high quality oils which need to be used on clean skin. He also suggested that the client should take a warm shower before coming to the massage so that it would aid in relaxation.

In clinic, when we would double up on clients, I would always do the legs and twice got a person with feet so dirty it looked like he'd walked over freshly laid asphalt! Since my school's signature thing was Shiatsu, we were not allowed to use oils, but did have our handy dandy hand sanitizers around. And used that on my hands before we flipped him onto his back.

When solo, I had a woman with particularly odorful feet that not even an EO spray that I made w/ tea tree would cover up. I pretty much skipped the feet it self and only got down to the ankles. The smell was so bad that the student in the cubicle next to me could sense it. When I was about to flip her over, I covered her body with the drape and then worked the feet, doing some compressions through the drape and then up the calves as I've become accustomed to doing.

After working on some of the grossest feet I've ever had the displeasure of meeting in the school clinic t087 , I decided that when I started my own practice that I would nip that one in the bud. Some people just have NO clue t104 !!! I have found that the feet are so much easier to work on while the client is prone. I tell them that, "I like to warm up your back and neck muscles before I really work on them so I will be placing warm stones on your back and neck. While the heat is doing it's thing by loosening up the muscles I will be starting on your legs and feet first. Since I do that, I like to wash the feet first. So you will feel a nice warm damp towel on your feet while I wash them and then I'll place a warm dry one to follow". I use a solution that our pedicure lady uses on the feet. Has tea tree in it so it smells really nice. I soak about 4 towels in that and wring them out. Place them in my crock pot and keep them warm through the day. Four people is my limit so four towels is all I need. Works great. People seem to like the extra touch or "pampering" as one client put it. They also seem to like it when I raise their calves up and it relaxes that gastrocnemius a little more after I've already worked on it and work their foot. I do it so it feels like it is part of their massage and not just a foot wash. I haven't had one complaint yet. Only rave reviews. Of course I always make absolutely sure before I begin that they don't have any objections. None so far. Will have to deal with that when it happens if they are nasty footed. I'd rather do the extra laundry than have to touch nasty foots. t045

I do make sure and lightly tug on the feet/leg once when they are supine after doing their legs. That way it's my signal that we are done and it kind of wakes them back up and grounds them a bit.

Some people have no common sense...can't believe they'd go to a massage with smelly/dirty feet! Yuck!
