Exactly, and soccer "hooligans" are notorious in England for getting carried away and trashing stadiums, causing riots etc.

I'm not surprised really, and yes, his "clothing" was a contributing factor in the assault (not saying it is his fault in any way shape or form but the fact remains, him wearing a giants jersey was THE reason he was targeted) but we're talking the US here and there are those who go out looking for trouble.

I used an example of one time I was working in Montreal and went to a bar to watch a montreal/toronto hockey game. I wore my leafs jersey. The bartender told me to NOT wear that in here. Luckily I had a shirt underneath so I took it off.

I know, it's sad that you can't have some friendly rivalry between teams (like an ottawa/toronto hockey game).......

Just an aside:

I think the whole problem lies in the fact that many assume that we live in a civilized society. The only thing that stands between us and total chaos is the police and the penalty of acting out. If you walk around thinking that all is well and good and there aren't those that look for excuses to do others harm, then you're living in a dream land. The thing is, most of us exhibit a little bit of self control but we all have a point in which we'll lose it. Some it's the protection of their family, some it can be as little as wearing the wrong clothes. For me it is calling my integrity into question. The key is to not do things (as I like to call it) to "poke the bear"......

For example: would you wear a "jesus saves" t shirt in afghanistan? Or how about a mosque in north york? Would you expect a woman to go topless in a catholic church? Would you wear a t shirt that says "bikers are fags" inside a hell's angel's bar? Now those are extreme examples but similar none the less.

It would be awesome if we could say what we want, do what we want, and wear what we want with no discourse but unfortunately we live in a society where there are consequences for our actions, some good, and some not so good. The consequences of wearing something inappropriate are there. They could be something as innocuous as your boss telling a woman to button up her blouse (heaven forbid) or as dangerous as getting attacked.

If one choses (and the operative word there is CHOSES) to wear something that might antagonize, entice, or garner unwanted attention, then one has to accept SOME of the consequences for that choice.

The only way i know of to achieve that (not accepting the consequences) is to wear a teflon suit....I knew a guy that wore one all the time and he NEVER was blamed for anything......We used to tease him that he saved a fortune on drycleaning because he could clean his suits with windex and a squeegee lol...(I kid you not, he had all his suits treated with this teflon treatment to protect them from staining etc).....

One more thing:

I think this is in part due to the fact that so many have nothing in their lives that mean something so they look to sports stars, or teams or ?? as something to "be" for. If people had more interest in their lives, or more self-esteem, then maybe they wouldn't take shit so seriously. I mean, it is simply entertainment. That's it, that's all, and nothing more.

True but this happens only once in a blue moon by idiots or drunk jerks. Been to many baseball and hockey games that the visitor team's fans wear their uniforms without the stupidity that went on with the Giants-Dodgers fans.

Never been to any US games. Will take your word but does harassment constitutes violence?. There is what, 162 games a year multiply that by 30 teams (15) that is a lot of games. Include other sports. How many times have this kind of violence has happened in North America the last 5-10 years compared to the Soccer world?.
