The more I think about this the more perplexed I am regarding this question. being from the Northeast it is a common occurence when you are a regular customer in a bar / restaurant etc that restaurant owners or bar owners and especially bartenders will occationally buy a good customer a drink.

Now maybe my mind is fried, but I am thinking now of all the nights I've spent and I mean tons of money back 1 1/2 years at the Key Largo, Del Rey etc, and can't remember once a BT at the KL or DR or waitress ever saying those words This one is on me or on the house.

Now I'm a fairly good tipper and aside from a night about 5/6 months ago when John at Kamur was gracious and bought me a drink I can't remember another incident? Is it quality control, on liquor or something in the culture I'm missing or perhaps nobody likes me :evil: ..... Your thoughts on this are appreciated or is it just me?

Reminds me of a story Guy walks into a bar in Key West and asks the bartender for 12 shots of Tequila RIGHT NOW! Bartender says boy you are very young let me see some ID! Guy shows him the ID and he had just turned 21 that evening.

Guy says congrats its your birthday I assume your celebrating with 12 shots of tequila! Guy says Nope actually tonight was my first Blow Job. Bartender says well hell Here are 12 shots and NO 13 IS ON THE HOUSE!

Guy says Thanks man but If I can't get that taste out after 12 -----13 certainly can't help!

Capo...that's a good question. Now that I think about it, the only time
in CR I've gotten free drinks was at the BW Irazu, but that's because
I'm good friends with the bartenders and I've stayed there about 17 times.
Even then, it only occurred on a couple of occasions. I think Dear_John's
response is pretty accurate...they look upon most Gringos as relatively
wealthy. I think another reason is that so few establishments in CR
serve draft beer. When bottled beer or mixed drinks are served, the
managers can accurately track the total consumption/sales for the night,
whereas with draft beer, they can't really track the actual/exact sales.

I have had several buybacks in Costa Rica, however, NEVER in the BM or KL. Just goes to show where their heads are. I wouldn't be surprised if the bartender would get fired for buying a drink in those places.

On the house

I have been here in CR for just about five years and have had a few drinks bought for me by the house in various places. These bars tended to be Tico bars. I have only had one drink bought for me in the Del Rey by a bar tender and that only happened a couple of months back.
