Time to reminisce. What was your very first job.

How old were you. How much you made and how did you get the job.

I started at 15 working at a factory making $1.65 an hour and my Mom made me do it because I was getting in trouble too much. Go figure, who would have guessed that.

15, working in construction (1 year less than the legal age for that industry). I was earning the minimum wage specifically set for construction which was a little more than the general minimum wage - $3 or $3.50 per hour, I can't recall.

Paper route at 12, the money sucked but the tips at Christmas were great.

Then I worked in a supermarket at 16 for $2.13 / hour in the early 70's, an excellent part time job with a dental plan. Haven't had one of those since then, should have stayed there. I might have been in charge of the dairy section by now.

14... McDonald's Lot & Lobby guy. (I was too young to work in the kitchen! LOL) When I turned 15, I got promoted to "Fry Guy"... and then I moved up to burger grill!

If memory serves: $2.15/ hr... :shock:

I remember rearranging the kitchen stuff so I could pretty much run the entire kitchen myself! (Almost got in trouble from the owner for that until one of the managers said, hold on a minute... just watch him go for 5 minutes... if you still think its a bad idea, I'll tell him to change it back.... Hee hee...)

McD's was actually my second job though... I forgot about the paper route I had when I was 11 or 12...

I was 16, and working in a KFC joint out on the highway, cooking Kentucky Fried Chicken. That was 47 years ago, and I earned $50.00 a week.

I still cannot eat KFC....

Don't laugh, I know people who went on to become store managers and are making 6 figures.

We used to laugh at a classmate who worked lunches, evenings and weekends at McDonald's.....then he moved on to Manager and now? Last I heard he owns 2 and lives in a huge house in a gated community....McD's are a licence to print money.

My first job was when I was 12, I approached the local Dairy Queen whose lot was always messy with trash etc. We said we'd clean the lot and he'd pay us what he thought the job was worth. We did such a good job he hired me and my buddy at $2.00 an hour (1973) to clean the yard and prep the trash twice a week. Then hired us to paint the place and do other things from time to time. Was a great summer job......(btw, this was back when gas was 39 cents a gallon so it paid for my trail bike and lots left over for other things).

My first job was working at a marina. I used to pump gas and check out bikinis. hmmm I can't remember how much I got paid.

First job that my rents lemme keep my money was at 14, working at Sesame Street theme park as a greeter. Take pictures, develop the film, make those tiny little souvenir keychains you can look thru, then sell them. I was paid $2.75/hr. I got the job by sketching my next door neighbor who worked at the theme park. Her dad worked for Anheuser-Busch who owns the kiddie park. She tried to give me the caricature stand job but it was apparently something I had to work up towards.

That is actually a story that has been repeated over and over again... I can totally relate... One of the junior managers (referred to as "swing" managers) at the time when I worked at McD's went on to become a head manager after I left. He soon realized that wasn't going to be good enough for him, so he put his name in for a corporate store managerial position. He got one... had to move to New Brunswick or something, which is where I lost track of him.... Fast forward about 20 yrs... when I was in process of moving to Cambridge, I stop at a local McD's for a coke (yes, back in the days when I still drank coke), and I see a familiar face walk by, but I just couldn't place it. So I ask the lady at the pick up window, "Is that the store manager?" "No", she says, "that's the owner", and included the guys first name. I said his whole first and last name, inquisitively, and she said "Yes, that's him, do you know him?" "Yes, I worked with him at McD's 25 yrs ago! Can you ask him to hold on a second?"

I parked my car and went into the restaurant to say hello and got the whole story. He moved out east, leveraged everything he owned, bought a franchise out there, made a a big ol bag of cash, paid all his debts and when the owner of the Cambridge store put his restaurant up for sale, he bought it. And 3 others a few years later. He now has a license to print money, and lives in a very exclusive neighbourhood here in town!

But I still won't eat his food! :beurk: LOL

This just shows that if you strive to be the best at something, no matter what it is, long term determination will away pay off in the long run. :great:

Yeah we used to laugh at our classmate in the goofy uniforms and whose laughing now eh?

They make more in an hour than we do in a month.....

Same goes for Crappy Tire stores. It used to be that all you needed was $25K clear and if you were the right type of person, you got a small store.

I know the manager who used to work at the willowdale store and he took home over $100K plus bonus' and profit sharing.

Got paid by the box (1000 worms per box) but can't remember how much.

You ever drive by a golf course or park at 2am and see a bunch of guys walking around out there with lights on their heads and coffee cans strapped to their legs and think, wtf?

I was maybe 12 or 13. The sad thing is, there were guys 30-40 years old doing it because they that's the only job they could find.

yeah it is pretty sad when someone is only qualified to do a job a 12 yr does.....especially after 30 odd years of living.....
