Explosive fire damages massage...
Goleta, Calif. - Santa Barbara County firefighters were busy Tuesday night keeping a fire from destroying businesses in Old Town Goleta.
The fire broke out near the intersection of Hollister Avenue and Orange Avenue just before 7 p.m.
Heavy smoke was seen coming from the attic of the Foot & Body Massage parlor while nearby powerlines outside the building were sparking.
Firefighters quickly cut a hole at the top of the roof to allow the dense smoke to escape. One firefighter said the smoke was toxic, and looky-loos were told to stay across the street for their safety.
The Mercury Lounge and the Noodle City restaurant were evacuated as a precaution.
Some witnesses said they heard what sounded like explosions coming from the area of the massage parlor.
Hollister Avenue was closed to traffic from Fairview Avenue to Magnolia Avenue. Santa Barbara County Sheriff's deputies assisted with traffic control while AMR medics staged nearby.
Firefighters contained the fire to a storage unit outside the massage parlor. No injuries were reported. The massage parlor and Eric Krebs Auto Body shop nearby suffered some minor damage to the exterior of their buildings, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.
However, Foot & Body Massage suffered extensive damage inside the business, the County Fire Department said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
