MANSFIELD — A car crashed through the entrance of a School Street spa around lunchtime Monday, injuring one person and startling many more.
Witnesses said the SUV-type vehicle backed through the glass entrance of Elements Massage at 333 School St.
The vehicle proceeded through most of the store and pushed through the wall at neighboring Hilliard’s Chocolate.
“It sounded like a bomb went off,” Brittany Kenyon, manager of Hilliard’s, said.
She was in the back of her store at the time of the 12:20 p.m. crash and said she and a co-worker ran outside to see what had happened.
The Mansfield Police Facebook page said one person was taken to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
Ashley Weimert was working behind the register at the chocolate store when it happened.
“At first I thought it was an earthquake because there was a huge noise and the place was shaking, but then I realized it was too loud to be an earthquake,” she said.
Weimert said a pregnant woman was among the customers of the salon at the time of the accident.
People on the scene said it was a miracle more people were not hurt as the vehicle appeared to hit the front desk at the salon.
“We’re all lucky to be alive,” Mike Andrews, manager of The Right Foot, an abutting shoe store, said.
Police and fire crews on the scene had to use power saws to cut away hanging pieces of steel window frames to allow a tow truck to back up through the doorway to pull away the crash vehicle.
Police said through social media that the crash is being investigated.
