Timothe - that's right - if you are in a city other than Moscow or St Petersburg, you can get an apartment for about 20 bucks a night. In Moscow you can find little old ladies holding up signs that say 'Kvartira' (kind of like in Prague) and get an old soviet-style place for less than places like rentline.ru that generally want Reviewom 80-100 a night for a furnished apartment in the center of Moscow. As I wrote logger in a PM, if you're getting a tourist visa invite, you should make sure that it includes registration - this costs about 45 bucks at visalink.ru where I get my 1-year multi-entry visas. I don't know if they telex the visa to the embassy or not, but THEY WILL SPECIFY THE NAME OF A BULLSHIT HOTEL that you will then get registered at for no extra charge.
