You see someone hit a child unnecessarily. What would you do?.

Because of the many laws in North America it would be tough to hit the person. But would you not want to give the person a beating and disappear before the cops get there?. Or would you just call the cops?.

Cops sometimes turn a blind eye on those that protect children that were being beat up. I know for a fact, too bad only a few do.

You are legally supposed to report child abuse. Any adult that is witness to or has knowledge of abuse is obligated to report such abuse to CAS or Police.

Now I know I'm going to get into trouble here, but the OP was about a child being hit and that's different from being beaten. Let keep some sense of scale here.

I'm not against slapping a child, not hard, but you'd better have a damn good reason and pick your moment really carefully. You'd also better not use an assist like a belt or rolled up magazine AND you'd better not raise your hand above your shoulder or leave a mark. That's a beating and that's just wrong. The demonstration is the key, not the severity of the contact.

For the record, I've never hit a child.

Stepping in is a dangerous path to go down. As you stated, it depends on a LOT of things and who are we to judge?

This brings to mind a US father who was up here visiting and was out shopping with the family. His son (3 I think? still in diapers anyways) was being a total brat in the parking lot and he gave him a little swat on the padded ass, he was reported and arrested and had to come up here to face charges.

I actually remember reading about the follow up and after posting bail, coming back up for the trial, the case was reduced to (something a LOT less than child abuse) and he was let go with time served. For once the newspapers reported ALL the facts and even though there were witnesses that stated it was just one light swat in the diaper clad backside, the police were forced to charge him.

Now I was one who was hit with everything from wire coat hangers, tree switches, wooden spoons, backhands across the face, I don't advocate using any "impliment" but a total hands off approach isn't the way to go either.

One benefit however is that I did learn how to take a punch......

I don't think there is anything wrong with a swat on the backside. As long as it's done as an attention grabber only. There is a big difference between a beating and a light spanking. I would never interfere with a parent handing out a light spanking to a deserving child.

My baby was 10 or so and we were on White Face Mountain

It was during the summer and we were walking the trails

She got a sliver in her palm and I pulled out my jack knife and tweezers from the first aid kit in my pack

As we sat and I cut out the sliver a woman in her 60s showed her disgust. I asked her would she rather I took her to the ER and did this?

She was dumbstruck. As anticipated.


BTW my daughter had no problem with dad doing first aid and using a knife.

Often there is an over-zealous CAS worker or Police Officer that takes things too far.

For me, one smack on the rear or hand should send the message, more than that becomes a grey area.

EG: If a toddler/child tries touching the stove, a smack on the hand and explanation why not to touch would be acceptable to me. The child has to learn.

If the child/toddler is being smacked continuously because of crying that's not acceptable.

I would believe most scenarios that we come across would be kids having a tantrum in a mall, grocery store, etc which is embarrassing but not worthy of a beating. If I were in that position, I would leave the cart where it is, return to my vehicle and return home sending the little monster to their room. Bread and water for a night ain't gonna hurt them.

This thread and line of discussion harkens back to that thread on the father who threatened the kids teasing his daughter and how the others were just laughing at him. Obviously they've been "spared the staff"......

Funny thing on this subject, verbal assault can be as, if not more damaging than a swat on the ass.....

20 odd years ago I wars in a local restaurant for breakfast with the family.

A table away from me was a family of 4.

Mom, dad sis and baby brother.

The boy was maybe 18 moths and tired so he was cranky.

Well it was Sunday morning and dad had a snoot full. As the boy got crankier dad got more pissed and began to hit him

Well by the time dad hit him 3 times I was on my feet, my sister voiced her objection to my action.

I grabbed dads hand mid swing and told him I think the boy had enough.

He asked me who the fuck I was and I told him today I am the boys guardian angel

He began to stand up and discovered he could not move. I advised him to never try this crap again as he never knows when i will show up.

Mom thanked me and the other patrons applauded. Bit more importantly dad knew he could never do that again

Call it kismet but I would step in again if I saw the need

I did read it and had a hard time deciding what the OP meant. I don't know anyone who just hit a kid for no reason. There's usually an action or a verbal exchange happening. So I have a difficult to me grabbing 'unnecessary'. To really grasp that term applied to any situation you'd have to be privy to the minutes leading up to the moment and the history of the family. For all we know the parent didn't get any last night or the kid is a holy terror and this was the last straw for the moment.

The terms hit and beating were being used in the posts interchangingly and they're really different.

Got to ski the lounge for a while did ya?

Skied it for a couple of years, but gave up skiing. I've been back there a couple of time out of season and it's great part of the state. I've got a cousin who spent many years as a Park Ranger in the area and when he told me his estimates on how many times he 'scrambled' up the mountain I'd gag on my cowboy coffee.

It coming up time for a visit to Mirror Lake again.

Corporal punishment is very different than one smack on the hand/butt. Read the CFSA and you'll get a better picture. In fact, if your child plays sports, all coaches use corporal punishment. Sprints, lines, push-ups, sit-ups, etc are all forms of corporal punishment if you want to be really technical about it.
