After effects of Acupunture

Hi

I'm currently receiving acupunture for my lower back and neck pain that's been going on for a long time. My acupunturist was recommended to me by bupa and she's a retired athesistatist (spelt wrong, I know). After one hour leaving my treatment I noticed she had left a needle in my neck, I noticed because I felt it irratating me, anyway since that day I have been in total agony neck and lower back more than I have been for some time - is it just coincidence or could it be because the needle was left in - personally I think it is just coincidence but I thought I'd ask on here - I haven't mentioned it to the acupunturist but I will next week when I go back.

I've been to the doctors this morning, he's prescibed diclafenic as my pain is so bad and i'm getting no sleep - don't usually take pain killers but I'm pretty desperate. I've rang the acupunturist and she was horrified to find that she's left the needle in my neck and says that's why I'm in so much pain - says she's put it right when I go back Wednesday night (two days) can't wait.

anyone else ever heard of this happening?

Hi Susan,

Firstly i'm horrified that a needle was left in your neck !!! You count your needles in ... and you count them back out again !!! First rule !!!!

I don't know enough about body acupuncture as I practice Auricular Acupuncture .... bet yes I guess it could well have over stimulated the Qi ?? Or even have caused bruising etc ....

In Auricular we're taught that there's an optimum time to leave the needles in place ..... after that time the effects wear off .... but it could well be different in body work ??

She ought to have had you back much sooner though...

I feel terrible, I haven't felt this ill for a long time, I was on the road to recovery, she said that she'd never done anything like that before and I believe her, I can't believe that such a tiny thing could produce so much pain, she said it won't go by itself and she has to put it right. I've taken the painkillers the doctor has prescribed and cocodamal and I can still feel the pain, I just hope I can have a bit of sleep tonight and can't wait until wednesday.
The needle came out of my left side of neck, the pain I'm having is all down my left side, down the left arm, all the way to my left calf, terrible pain in my left hip, mirrowing down the right but not as bad. And I feel like I've been hit on the back of the head!
I'm just hoping there's no permanant damage...should I hold on to the needle or give it back?

What do you mean by stimulated the Qi?

Hi Susan,

In TCM pain is normally associated with some form of blood and Qi stagnation ..... meaning the Qi isn't flowing through the body/meridian smoothly and that's what causes the pain !! By inserting the needles the acupuncturist is aiming to restore the flow of Qi and reduce any stagnation or blockage !!

This sounds like a nightmare. Have you rung the acupuncturist to ask (nay, demand!) that she see you tomorrow rather than Wednesday? If she's sure she can put things right, then it behoves her to do so immediately rather than for you to suffer for another two days. If I were you I'd turn up on her doorstep and it would just be too bad if other clients were there and had to hear why you had come back. I don't mean you should threaten her at all and you obviously don't blame her personally as many people would (good for you for accepting that stuff happens!) but she really should see you tomorrow.

When I spoke to the acupuncturist she didn't suggest that I come over to get it fixed straight away but even if she did I can't go until Wednesday evening as arranged, my husband works shifts and he takes me, it's too painful for me to drive myself so I'm just going to have to get through the next few days and hopefully it will get sorted...I hope, I don't fancy being in this agony for too long...will report when I've been.

Does anyone think I should keep the needle or should I give it back?

Sorry to hear that, Susan. It would appear to be a case of gritting your teeth and bearing it, but, as with childbirth, you'll probably find it easier to cope with the pain if you can practise some kind of relaxation technique or meditation. It is possible to rise above pain (or so I'm told!) Hang on in there!
