Cheapest Beer in the Gulch?

Besides buying beer at the Mas o menos and sitting in my room chugging, where is the cheapest place in the Gulch to pound some brews (beer only please) before getting the night going. My friends and I are pretty hardcore drinkers and run up a tab easily at $3 bucks a beer and would like to find a relaxed cheaper place to drink and maybe get a bite to eat without going broke as we consume a 12 pack each before going out for the night.

Also is it customary to tip at a "bar" or is a 10% added in already to the price of each beer?

If you really want to save money, get out of the gulch and go to a Tico bar. Try Bar Camelot, it is a Tico place with available chicas. It is real close to the gulch, so you don't have to worry about getting lost. Also, Ticos never tip, so you save more.

Are the Ticos pretty tolerant of gringos drinking in their place or will we be unwelcome. I speak some spanish and we keep a low profile in general, but have had some uncomfortable times in "locals" bars in Mexico before. Of course I could say the same about some of the bars I have found myself at in the outskirts of Texas and Louisiana too!

I usually go to tico bars and I've never had any problems. Most of them mind their own business and the one that do approach you are very friendly and are just interested in meeting gringos. A cheap place to go to is Bar Chaplin on avenida one in San Pedro. It's next to the KFC and beers in a bottle are 310 colones. They have dart, and foosball. Best time to go is during the weekdays. Especially since they are a bunch of small univerisities around the area so you get a lot of college girls. However, it is not in the gulch but very close by. about 500 colones taxi drive or a 100 colone bus ride from the gulch. It is owned by lebanese people and the lebanese food is excellent. The name has recently changed but you cant miss it since it is the bar right on the right of KFC if you are facing KFC.

Don't know the name of it, but walk out of the BM facing the Monkey bar, turn left, go to the end of the block, turn right, and there is a cheap tico bar--I was buying two shots and a bottle of agua for 1100 colones. I was there in the daytime, no problemo, don't know about nite

are you talking about the tico bar next to asia hotel? If that is the case, yeah, that one is pretty cheap and you can get beer to go there late at night for a decent price

Kotigre-correct me if I'm wrong, as I was drunk with dos tica chicas waiting for me at the BM to enrich their lives, but could the econo-minded, undiscriminating , GFE oriented gringo find companionship there??

LOL, to be honest, I've only had luck picking up one regular college girl from that place. However, the bartenders(the chicsk mind you) are pretty easy once you become a regular. But then again, most of the time I'm so lazy that I dont often bother with college girls. Most of the one I've met are spoiled like in the states. Anyway, I'll have to get a lot of looks from the girl before I pour on my 30 year old charm on them which is why I still do some mongering once in a while. But yeah, it is possible for someone in their 30s. Any age above, I dont know yet.
