Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council launch

I think the FHT alone has almost 20,000 complementary therapy members, and I think CThA has half that number at least, maybe more, so no, definitely not including CAM practitioners in the figures I quoted (I think there are 7,000).

Out of the members im sure it is a majority, but I wouldnt know the exact figure. We only know if someone is eligible or not, when they apply.

This is the big issue. What are the PA's doing to push the CNHC. Why aren't they contacting or even sending out a blanket emails to their Sports Therapies members really promoting the CNHC?

Remember that every year, the SST get hundreds of Students signing up to them. Not all make it, but I would think that a significant number go onto full membership. That happens every year. It has been highly conspicuous that the SST have not really made any statements apart from their initial one regarding voluntary registration. I suspect this is because they don't see the SRTC or vol regs as much of a threat?

At the moment the SST hold all the cards, FA, RFU etc recognition, Universities and lots of very high profile people involved in the Sports Medicine world.

I think that the PA's of the SRTC need to pull their weight a bit more and get their members applying to the CNHC. AND, like it or not the SRTC needs to start getting stuck into the Uni students. With out them and the clout and sheer numbers that they bring to the table, I think the SRTC will be dead in the water. That is the harsh reality of it. The SRTC needs to be offering these students (who can ultimately win the battle for them) something that the SST cannot. If the SRTC starts winning them over then it will force the SST to sit at the table with them.

As for recognition, I wouldnt believe the hype...ive worked in the sports therapy industry for long enough to know what is hype and what is fact, and there is a lot of clever marketing and spin done......

I honestly think you are making too big an issue of the universities, look on the sports therapy forums, and you will see how successful people are. Ive said many times on here, there are more diplomates working in top level sports than uni grads, because most of them have the benefit of experience, which is was is required, and the uni courses have been here for less than 10 years.

Most of the STs that I know are very happy with their work, their earnings and their success, and most of them have no interest in working in professional sport.

I am just going on the calibre and experience of speakers that the SST have at their annual conference. Another example is on the England RFU site they recommend to clubs that if they take a sports therapist on their staff that they are Graduate members of the SST.

I have to disagree on this even though I know you have been in the business for a long time. I am sure that there are lots of Sports Massage Practitioners working in elite sports and in team sports. However I would like to know how many top sports men and women and teams employ diplomate sports therapists. My research has indicated that the are mostly Chartered Sports Physiotherapists or Graduate Sports Therapists

I would probably approach the course leaders to get a feel for opinions, there maybe a lot of discontent with the way things are progressing (or not) with Stat regs. Sure they will have ties to the SST and you will get the door slammed in the face but you will always find at least a couple of allies.

Organise an event directed at the students. They are probably getting all their information at the moment about the SRTC and CNHC from very biased and negative sources. Why not give them the opportunity to find out first hand and let them know that there is an alternative. Get industry suppliers along maybe a few freebies thrown in. If you cant advertise through the ST departments then do it through the student unions, face book, twitter. Just got to find a way in.

im not being flippant, just dont wholly agree with your first two points, and its good that you actually take an interest.

If you do belong to a PA, and any at that, you should contact them with ideas, they want people to get involved. At the end of the day that is partly what you pay your membership fees for.

you spend so much time telling us we are not doing our job properly, remember this, we work full time in the industry, we do the council work voluntarily. I have a large family and 2 businesses to run. Why dont you spend some of the time spent researching doing something positive and send your CV to SRTC and apply for a role. you could start by contacting all the sporting bodies and asking them why they are so determined to have SST graduates.
I can tell you for a fact that to work in RFU it is a minimum of PHysio degree, the FA have been a closed shop for decades running their own injury management course at level 3 at Lilleshall which you cant do until you have their level 1 and 2 but they dont now run them at local FA level due to funding issues. First4sport run a lot of their courses now

its good to see that what has turned into a controversial subject is continuing to get government support, and CAM is progressing as something that is becoming more recognised.

Here is a press release from the Department of Health

The CNHC is sponsored by the Department and we recommend that where people are looking for complementary healthcare practitioners, they use someone who is CNHC-registered.” (Department of Health, January 2011)

I got mine also, pleased with the level of support and progress but I believe it is not important what I think or do as there will always be those on here who will be happy to belittle the work CNHC do and choose not to register.
