Hives?

Hi, I have this client that has been coming to me for several months now with no problems. Yesterday she came in had her usual massage and soon after I started she broke out in hives. at first she broke out on her upper legs and then they moved to her abs and chest. I have not done anything different with her this time then in the past I still use the same gel to massage with. I have not changed any thing on how we clean the sheets or anything. It was very bad and I was thinking it might be her nerves or something other then the massage itself. Any one have any ideas? ThanksEmily

Did she say if she maybe tried a new product that day (i.e. shampoo, bodywash, lotion,etc.) or maybe ate something out of the ordinary??  My first thought would be that it was NOT from the massage.  Did you use a different detergent or fabric softner on your sheets??  Other than that, I can't think of anything you did differant that maybe could have caused them.My husband broke out in a serious case of hives one night after eating Pizza Hut for dinner.  We'd had it numerous times before and nothing had happened, but that night he broke out into the mother of all cases of hives.  It was strange!  Who knows, huh!??

A person can become allergic to anything at any time.  She could have suddenly developed an allergy to something you were using on your sheets, on her, or even to something she ate earlier that day, or a body product she uses.Does you client already have other allergies?It would be interesting to see if it happens again when she's on your table.  If so, obviously you might need to modify how you clean sheets for her, or use a different oil or cream.  Let us know what happens next time.

I'd be curious to know from some of the energy workers or regular therapists out there, if they have ever seen this happen in a session when a particular emotional response was triggered.I know hives is usually a physical response, but I can't help but feel that since this happened on the table, maybe it was an "emotional" one.  (?)Thoughts, anyone?

Hives?

Yep, Hives can be caused by emotional release or stress. I should know. During a particularly stressful time in my life I was breaking out on a daily basis, and had to be medicated. We tried everything to figure out what it was, changed detergent & softener to dye and fragrance free rewashed ALL of my clothes, change bodywash etc, etc, etc.When it came down to it tho, none of it helped. I was getting to my wits end... it was horrible. Eventually we figured out it was a severe emotional issue and a physical response to the stress I was under. Again, I'm under a little stress, and fortunately, I'm not responding like I did, but I'm getting hives again. Not on a daily basis (fingers crossed it doesn't come to that) and this time Benadryl is actually working for me. However this time, I know what the cause is and that helps. Sometimes at the first sign of hives I can take a few deep breaths, relax my body, and they will go away with no medication. Sometimes it takes time to figure out whether it is a response to an allergen or to something emotional. (It took me 4 months). Emily, Have you seen this client again? Is she still breaking out?

Hives?

I've suffered on and off with Hives for the past 10 years. And I have to go with the Stress factor as well. Not that I don't also have an allergen factor, because sometimes I DO think that's an issue for me too. I too would break out on an daily basis.I first got them just 3 days after my friend Gina died (May 23 was the 10th anniversary). I got them the following year while attending MT school. (I confess I was so stressed I considered quitting and I was already more than half way through the course.) I had it a couple of times when I worked at the salon... and I even suffered from it this spring as well. I think a tree allergen might be a factor for me as mine usually seems to trigger in April or May.I have a client who is an M.D. and this spring I was suffering from them one day and she offered to get me some allergy med samples from her office. I found Clarinex, Zrytec and Singulair to be most helpful. As for OTC Meds, Benadryl is effective for me but knocks me out. zzzz LOL A Dr. who saw me for the first occurence recommended the OTC med Sudafed, but it's no longer effective for me. At first I tried to pin it down to something else, but I've pretty much reached the conclusion that it's not a soap or dye or anything like that for me... though I do believe it's a combination of environmental allergies and stress which gives me the "itch." LOL
