In the US most people always vote for the same party each election, consequently the vote is close to 50/50 and elections are won on the margins. Trump has his own cult of personality that is attractive to both the disaffected and the mean spirited. Hilary Clinton had a grotesque sense of entitlement that led her to call a whole class of people "The Deplorables". Hilary fucked up, and the Democrats fucked up by fucking over Bernie Sanders (and they would like to screw Bernie again). People are so polarized that they just do not have differences of opinions, they also cannot agree on the facts. Amazon does not pay taxes, Walmart does not pay a living wage (many of their employees are on food stamps!), the Koch family pollutes indiscriminately, etc. One of the first things that Trump did was give an unpaid for trillion dollar tax cut to the wealthy. For working people the average salary increase in the last three years has been 1%. And that is only because about 21 states have increased their minimum wage.
