Opinions: Solid Massage Bars vs. Oils??

Hi! I an a relatively new practitioner, and I was wondering what people's opinions are regarding solid massage lotion bars vs. oils.  I have been working with bars, and find them less messy and easier to work with, but what does everyone else think? Guidance and advice would be much appreciated!

Reikigirl,I've never even seen a solid bar used for massage. I make my own oils using coconut oil & essentials. Where did you get your bars? I am so curious. And what are the main ingredients? Sorry to answer your question with questions. Inquiring minds want to know!  Jill/Sagetherapist

I get my bars from a local natural pharmacy, and they are handmade by a local woman. The bars are made with all natural ingedients, and they come either unscented, or scented with eo's. The bars are made with a base of fixed oils (usualy a "butter" of some sort) and can contain a whole host of other oils, depending on how heavy you want the resulting oils to be. You rub the bar inbetween your hands, and the oils liquify with your body heat. The other option is to rub the bar directly onto the body of the recipient, but I like to use my hands to warm the oils. It's great - no mess, no spills, and no having to warm oils. And the ingedients are all natural, so that makes it even better!

Wow, I haven't heard about these massage bars either.  Sounds really neat.  Does the oil melt in your hands quickly? I guess those bars aren't available here in Houston.

Yeah, reikigirl, can you look on the label the next time you purchase some? If there's a website or a contact, please let us know. I am curious to try it. I'm sure others are too. But what about cross-contamination? If you rub the bar on a person's body (or even go back to the bar for more product) you are definitely transferring epitheleal cells & other "stuff". I've use massage bars occasionally.  The only problem with them is hygiene protocol.  Obviously, you can't use the bar from client to client.  You have to break the bar and inevitably you have too much or too little.  In it's defense, I've only used it a few times and never really mastered it.  I buy them at a small soap, aromatherapy, bath and body store in Los Angeles.  It's called Splash Bath and Body.  Find them at http://www.splashbathandbody.com.  I'm sure they do internet or mail order.  They hand-make most of their products.  Enjoy.  Joe E.

Not only hygeine, but what about the inconvenience of having to unground urself everytime you need more oil. Or do you have a solution? Just a thought.

I have never seen them either. I always use a heavy massage cream. It melts into the skin nicely and provides good glide. My clients tell me they prefer to come to me just for that reason, since they can leave and do some shopping without having to go home to shower, or to worry that oil is getting on their car seats!

:Hi. I am still taking massage classes, but have gone over the mediums and have not heard of these.I am interested in at least giving them a try. I so far enjoy creams the most, but, that of course is subject to change.If you have information on where these can be purchased please let us know.Has anyone used these that has gotten past the sanitation issue? (Put cut them , or found a way to use them effectively? I would love to hear!!!!!!!!!!Mickey

To Debbie,      I was just wondering where you get your heavy massage cream, and if it is 'pre-fragranced', or if one can add their own essential oils? Also, where can it be purchased and is it expensive? Lol, sorry for so many questions, but I've never used a heavy massage cream and was interested. You said it gives a good 'glide' which is very important, and the differences in various oils and lotions can be noted for their 'good glide' or lack of it. I've bought massage bars from Lush, for personal use. That was years ago, I don't really like any of the new ones.

If they could be made cheaply enough by one's self, then you could deal with hygiene by using a new bar for each client. Perhaps it would be suitable to send the remaining bar home with him/her.

Enough information is available on the internet to fill my massage room with printed pages.  Here is a simple solid massage bar recipe:  Melt together equal parts of:  beeswax, cocoa butter, olive oil.  You could add a little eo if you wanted, but if you use beeswax that has not been over processed, it wlil have a wonderful honey fragrance all on its own.  (the cocoa butter will add smell too.)  Don't like cocoa butter?  Use shea butter.  Use aloe butter.  Use almond butter.  Use mango butter.  Use coconut oil.  Use almond oil instead of olive.  Basic recipe is a hard wax, a butter and an oil.  Perceneforum.xxxes can be varied to match your conditions........ie, a hot room,  a cold room, (climate will affect meltability).Make em and pour them into a deoderant tube or the like.  Use one for each client.  First time client?  Use oil or lotion or have some solid lotion cubed up, but little cubes are hard to use.  mick

Perhaps a bar can be given to the client much the same as a manicure kit is given/bought when getting nails done.
