Pet peeve, got ripped off using dollars, at Oasis no less!

I went to Oasis for the 50th or so time, always great. I used dollars for the umteenth time, this time they tried to give me 480 on the conversion. I hate getting scammed because I am a Gringo, thats my pet peeve. I stormed out, nothing enrages me more than getting petty scammed. I have used C notes there before and always got 500-510 depending on how long ago. The girl told me management recently lowered it. I could give a F*%k about the money, I always tip 10K ( I know, I know, ruin it for others etc, hey I do stuff that makes Dr Kinsey cross his legs).

I hate it at Cerruti restaurant, I won't stand for it from taxi's, and I will now stay away from Oasis for a while.

Man am I pissed! And before anyone comments, I am not a newbie, lost my password on my original Elusive name and just added Elusive1.

I don't think so. I think it's safe to say Oasis been on a slow decline since Yolanda left. It's still good and better than others, but "I hate getting the scammed because I am a Gringo. I mean "480" the worst tourist restaurant wouldnt pull that.

I pay for everything in colones as you most always get a better price. When paying in dollars you are just that much more likely to get charged the gringo price. I have found MP's in multiple countries charge and premium when paying in dollars. I do have to agree Oais has slipped. Kama Sutra seems to be the up and coming place in the area. rbc100

Of course, I always pay in Colones when possible. I just happened to only have C notes on me. Actually, I specifically went to Oasis as they always seem to break big bills without issue.

Pay service fees on to go orders at Fridays, Outback, or Tony Roma's
Let the taxi drivers not turn on the meter
Accept CBJ
Pay traffic police when you have done nothing wrong
Pay Cien

Another shot at my theory- from the AM CR article on the new exchange-

The story was different at smaller, private entities. One reported that it would give customers 470.60 colons for each dollar. That was well below the average of about 521 colons to the dollar. That was another way of saying they had enough dollars or maybe "Tourists welcome."

None of us could care less about the extra 1K some taxis try to charge us, but I am sure most of us resent being taken for fools. I know everyone says it, but it's the principal not the money. Anyhow, I went over to Pirate, paid twice as much, and was quite happy to do so.

I don't know about that, TW... My wallet isn't bulging with the 3 10k colon bills I usually take when I go out for the night. For those who plan to pay cien for a chica from the Del Rey, you can keep your pile of C notes in the room, right?

Of course, I live here and am very comfy with Colones. To the newer visitors I always recommend getting Colones out of ATMs. You'll get a good rate and now that the Colon has been floated, stories of rip off exchange rates are beginning to multiply.
