the salon that i work in doesn't have a heating vent in my massage room and i am in need of a table warmer. i have looked into table warmers made for massage tables and think the price is a bit much...someone told me that you can use a twin size electric blanket insted.  has anyone tried this?

Hello!In our clinic, despite having central heating, we also have heating on the beds.  We just use normal electric blankets and place them under the towels that cover the couch (we use towels instead of a couch cover).  That way as soon as they lay on it they are heated (or baked!).  The clients absolutely love it, they think it's the height of luxury and it shows that you've gone the extra mile to make the treatment enjoyable for them.Mine has a three settings, but I tend to keep it on the lowest unless they really feel the cold.  They are very handy during massage, as it helps warm up the muscles for you, there's nothing worse than spending ages warming up the tissues and having little time to really work them!  And as the body cools down so much during massage, facials etc, it means they stay warm throughout the treatment without the therapist having to bake too!  Slightly related, we also have a hydrotherm, which is sometimes known as dry flotation, and is basically a heated wamassageplanet.neted, for which they spend the entire time on their back.  For this the therapist has to massage the back by placing the hands between the hydrotherm and the persons back (using their weight for deep pressure).  It's great for pregnant clients or those whose backs get stiff when left for too long in one position (although a heated blanket under the couch cover will help prevent this!).Much love,Martin

An electric blanket seems a little unsafe to me according to the manufacturer's warnings not to  lie on them, however, I used a twin bed warmer on my massage table for years.  They are cheaper than the ones made for massage tables  and feel ok except sometimes you can feel the coils through the sheet.  The ones made for massage tables are made to have a fleece table cover over them (more expense).  It might be a little bulky to get a fleece cover over a twin bed warmer.  Our clients rave about our heated tables, so an investment either way is worth it.

I would be really careful with an electric blanket especially if you're using moist heat towels as part of your massage.  The table warmer is better/safer investment.  Just keep in mind that they produce quite a bit of heat.  I find I get a little over-heated when I use mine in winter.  Joe E.

"An electric blanket seems a little unsafe to me according to the manufacturer's warnings not to  lie on them."This obviously depends upon the make of the blanket as the one we use states in the instructions that it may also be used safely as an underblanket provided it is tied to the bed.I would also advise against using them with wet towels etc, but then I would hope anyone that's managed to qualify in a therapy would have been trained enough to be aware of the danger of mixing electricity and water anyway!!Much love,Martin

I worry about the health risks of electromagnetic fields and had decided that I would not use any sort of electric blanket or electric table warmer in my own practice.  I keep blankets on hand and have a space heater I turn on about 15 minutes before the session to warm the room up.However...Last month I had my first massage on a table that had been warmed up with one of those electric table warmers that I thought were so evil.  OH MY GOD it made such a difference!  (I've had some otherwise good massages in the past ruined because I was shivering too much to relax.)  The extra warmth really made the whole experience a lot more pleasant and relaxing.So, I've changed my mind about table warmers.  I ordered one, it's scheduled to arrive in a couple days.  I decided that comfort was too important to worry about the minimal risks of a single hour of EMF.

I have a Sunbeam twin size bed warmer which I sometimes use. It basically gets used once or twice per week... as I save this one for my outcalls. (This will be it's third winter.)

On the other hand, I also have a Thermophore, which was part of my MT school equipment package. And I can't tell you how many of my clients have RAVED about how great the heated table is.  Suffice it to say, MANY. (This will be it's seventh winter.)

The great thing about the Thermophore, is that I believe it's said to pull humidity from the air, thus supplying the client with Moist Heat.

The bad part is it only has one setting, on or off. However, that doesn't bother me to much.  It's well worth the money, and as stated your clients will appreciate the extra little bit of concern and what they perceive as "luxury". Though they say the Thermophore costs only pennies per day to use.

I personally have been using the Thermophore for nearly seven years now, and I have a M.D. who I massage weekly. She always has cold hands and feet, and we joke how she won't even let me in her house without one of my table warmers!  I'm serious, even in the summer! Since we live in the Northern climes, it's maybe once week per year that I might not have to use it. LOL   She liked them so much she asked me to find one of the Sunbeam one's in Queen size for her bed. She wanted to climb off the heated massage table and go right upstairs into a nice warm bed after her massage.  I found her one at Wal-mart of course, and now for her... life is good. LOL

Heating the table seems like such a little thing. But it becomes a "Value Added Service", something inexpensive for you, but just what your clients need to see you as spoiling them, and setting you apart from your competiton in their eyes! ;D

I always use a table warmer year round where I work. Clients love it. Got it at Massage warehouse. I agree with other posters. I would not feel comfortable using a heating blanket  not intended to be laid on top of. I DO have a fleece pad over my electric table warmer. Adds a softness and cushion to table.

I have a fleece pad too, but I don't take it on outcalls. It helps reflect the heat back to the client during the winter months, and is cooler in the summer they say.I use the fleece pad and the table warmer and then put a very thin mattress pad over top, allowing the heat to go through, but providing a little protection from the oils to the layers below.Super soft and warm, your clients won't want to get off the table.

Hi, all!The table warmer I've been using for a while now I bought at ShopKo for $30-something. Twin size.  A little big for a massage table, but I put it over a fleece thing and that fills out the space a little. Mine also has the coil arrangement such that the legs get more heat than the torso, and I keep it that way. I have far more clients with cold feet than cold torsos. The covering is cotton-like, and makes no noise. Now that the temps are in the 20s (and below) here in Nebraska, my clients love it!Andrea

Ok, so I went out and bought the table warmer and the fleece table cover last week from MassageWarehouse. I used it during clinic last Thursday and my clients absolutly LOVED it. I believe that it was one of the best investments I have made besides for my table of course. It made my clients feel comfortable and relaxed which is just they way they are supposed to feel. I believe that unless you live in a hot climate 24/7/365 you should really invest in a table warmer.

I use a heated throw on my table with the fleese on top.  My clients love it.  I use it year round.  Another helpful hint is to get a warmer for their back and place it on them after you finish massaging the back.  My clients love this.  Of course you dont want to use this on anyone who is having hot flashes, lol.  Typically my male clients dont care for the heat.

I use a twin size heated mattress pad.  Must be safe or they would not make it to lay on...right?  Hope so.  I also cover my clients with a fleece blanket if they so choose.  That way I can keep it cooler in my room and don't get so hot.  I am sure you all probably do the same?~Deb~

I use an ordinary electric blanket and its great since I get so hot while I do massage- the client stays warm and I don't bake.  Look to buy on in the Spring.  I got my last one for $11, it is a full size (I fold it) and it was originally $50-60, I think.  Wal-mart, wouldn't you know. I wish I could get a twin size, but they aren't so easy to find, even at full price.  I did see some a few years back that were twin size but they were so expensive- almost as much as a queen size.

I got my twin size through Fingerhut 2 yrs ago. Yes, very pricy, but I feel my clients deserve it. Besides, it's all deductable. Just my 2 pennies.

Got a twin-sized bed warmer from KMart for $29.95.  Check the warning label, some electric blankets recommend that you do not lie ON them.
