What do you use to warm oil?

I don't warm oil for a massage.
I don't see the need for the type of massage work that I do - and really, that hot oil thing is more what the "sensual" massage people do.

However, if I am doing a body scrub I WILL make up two rubber bowls of my salt and oil mixture (or whatever I am using)and leave one in the hot towel cabi or crock pot while I am using the other.
And I do the same for body treatments - like to warm up a mud mixture if I am doing a wrap. I only do this for client comfort because in a body treatment the draping is very minimal.

So anyway - if you use a pump bottle for your oil you could do the same thing...use two and keep one in the crock pot or cabi.

What do you use to warm oil?

Personally I've used heated oils for years - simply because I find it makes sense. After all our own body temperatures are in the 90's & so room temp oils feel cold to me anyway. I feel much more pampered & relaxed when I'm treated to a warm table & warm oils as well! So, I like to do the same for my clients, especially with many of my women clients who tend to feel cold - particularly in the wintertime. Most of my clients give a nice big sigh of relaxation right from the start when I warm my hands before a session, & use hot stones, so why not warm oils too?

As to what I use to warm them. I keep my oil in pumptype dispensers & have them sitting in mugs of water, on top of beverage warmers (cup heaters). These are generally sold in many hardware stores as well as stores like K-Mart, or Target, etc.

I don't use a warmer, just my hands. :altwink: My hands run very hot, people think that I use a oil warmer and some even think I'm using hot stones.

I've seen somewhere that there is a warmer holster that you can purchase. If I come across it I'll post the link. I seem to remember it being a little pricy tho.

Warm oil feels sooooooo much better than cold. I disagree completely that it has a "sensual massage" connotation. Instead, I think it's one of those details that makes you stand out as a therapist. It shows you care about your client's experience from the very first touch. Like riversinger says, warm oil enhances the relaxation, whereas cold can cause goosebumps. I use this miniature crockpot:

I've had mine for almost 10 years. It's designed to warm things, instead of cook them, so it never gets too hot. It's also large enough to heat cream as well as oil. Just fill with water & plug it in.

Umm - the oil I use isn't cold. I don't keep it on ice!

The room is over 70 degrees and I only use a small amount of oil which is warmed in my hands...and like Talenyn those run pretty warm when I work.

Now the people that use creams...THAT can get cold. Been there...

They may not advertise it, but that doesn't mean they don't heat their oil. Every Ritz Carlton spa therapist is required not only to use hot oil, but to dribble it on the clients back before applying their hands. It's one of their signatures.

Oh good grief. I work in a CLINIC and the therapists who use oil heat it up. (In the microwave no less. Warming up the oil isn't going to magically transform someone into a prostitute, it's just consideration for the client.

I go to my clients, but even in winter I've never had a problem with the oil being cold. Usually my hands get so hot that the little bit of oil I put in them warms right up and people ask HOW did I do that??

What oils do each of you warm up? I'd guess jojoba would be fine, but would be afraid to warm some of the others. Do you just warm what you need for that session?

What do you use to warm oil?

I work in a couple different doctors' offices. Each of them has the 2-3 bottle warmer.

However, when we get there first thing in the morning, there is usually not enough time to start them up before we start working on the first patient.

Sooo...we do it the cheap and easy way. We wrap the bottle in a hydrocollator pack for about 5-10 minutes.

I typically warm up as much as I need for the sessions I'm doing that day. If there's not enough time to fully heat them prior to the client's arrival - I just
take the cup plus the bottle of oil & run hot water over them both for a few minutes. Once that's done the cup heaters keep the oil up to the desired temperature.

Hot towel cabi. I've melted many bottles though setting them in front of a space heater, or in the microwave.
